I think WoW's "dungeon finder" ends up feeling like a huge regression for the genre.

The entire purpose of UO and EQ was to create games where everyone played in a persistent world, together. We had games with lobbies that had you queue up for a single game with a relatively fixed objective and time period before we had MMORPGs. And that's exactly what a game that relies heavily on instances and matching people together to teleport them instantly feels like. They've gone and reverted back to multiplayer online RPGs, no longer are they "massively multiplayer" most of the time.

However, they can get some of the advantages without the disadvantages if they want to. If they don't just copy WoW completely, we could instead have a sort of cross-server search function where you can browse people's search comments from other worlds and invite them to do something. Not instantly teleporting everyone to the location for free would help too; require everyone be at the entrance to enter the instance just like normal.
