I totally disagree with what you said right here. This only thing stops me to even care about the gear because it will be obselete ( if not already by the day the patch comes up ). FF XIV is a rich game but its balance his horrible :/They implement new content with new gear, with various methods of acquiring gear. They space out the time between content updates so the gear doesn't become outdated in a handful of weeks or a couple of months. It lasts. That's time to catch up if you took time off, or to enjoy being as up-to-date as possible.
So would you be happier if the gear upgrade was at the start of the expansion and there was no possible way to get better gear at all until the next expansion?
I'd probably be happier if I got gear at the start of the expansion and then upgraded it with stats and bonuses of my choosing over the course of the expansion.
Think relic armor but closer to tomestone grind than relic grind though.
It could even be better for keeping people playing, hit your upgrade cap for the week? Work on an alt set, something purchasing with tomestone currency prevents at the moment.

I'm with Jandor. I'd rather be able to upgrade my stuff as we went. The gear treadmill isn't encouraging me to play and stay bleeding edge. Oh, it works for that at first. But after a few patches where your tometone gear is rendered obsolete by the next patches dungeon gear, I stop wanting to do it.

Can't lie, that is an awesome idea, Jandor. I think something like, 'Relic Gear,' would be really awesome. Though it would require a set update for each job as well, which strikes me as requiring a lot more art assets. Still, being able to unlock a glamour for clearing a specific dungeon or EX would also be pretty nifty.
I was thinking along the lines of 'allagan adaptive armor' or something. You upgrade it with allagan tomestones, you set the stats and possibly appearance by getting it copy other armors. Can't lie, that is an awesome idea, Jandor. So, for example, you probably upgrade the set with a max of 450 of the latest tomestones per week before it overloads and needs time to 'reset', you get it to 'adapt' (take a bonus stat from) other armors by feeding it the secondary tomestones?
It's the same basic grind, but more personal IMHO.
E: I probably would keep tomestones capped at 900 a week, I also have probably missed several negative implications about catch up gear and stuff. Just an idea I like.
