    Question about outfits

Hello, I've been on the free trial for about a week, and the game looks pretty good so far. I did have a couple questions regarding outfits that has come up. I've read that at level 50 you have a glamour system, but that aside, is there a good way to avoid certain outfits? I'm literally still using level 6 armor on my level 17 Lancer, because honestly, I really don't want to run around looking like He-Man the Barbarian (leather subligar, leather harness).

Also, most characters have been fine, but one player I saw had basically a bikini with gloves and leggings. And a hat, because why not. Is this a regular occurrence at high levels, as some MMO's tend to, or just someone's personal choice? I haven't seen much of any trouble, so I suspect these are more isolated events, but I know some games have you wearing less and less clothing as you get to higher levels.

Most of the revealing gear in the game, including the bikinis, are level 1 items. If a player chooses to use them for glamour, it has no effect on game play whatsoever; glamours are purely for aesthetics. Final Fantasy XIV has a pretty good mix of revealing and non-revealing gear choices to select from. In Dragoon's case, most of the higher level gear tends to be non-revealing, with a few exceptions. You will be able to glamour any piece of gear onto your current armor, as long as it is not above your current level, and Dragoon can natively equip the piece of gear you are using for the glamour.

So yes, you can avoid running around "looking like He-Man the Barbarian," once you reach 50. As for whether players running around using bikinis for glamour is a regular occurrence; it can be. It really depends on what a player feels like glamouring. However, you do not have to follow this trend, and you will be able to glamour your character with a full set of non-revealing glamour if He-Man is not your thing.

You will have to go through a He-Man phase though.
Level 6 gear on a level 17 character is way too low already, and you can't keep wearing your lvl 6 gear until you hit 50.
View it as an extra incentive to get to 50 soon
I know it's unpleasant for now, but once you have unlocked the system (and all the cool lvl 50+ armor for DRG!) it's gonna be great :3

    About your worries:
You can check here, they show several of the endgame gear sets + all of the lvl 1 glamour sets.
As you see, "revealing" is not exactly something you'd use to describe endgame gear. Most semi-naked gear is actually lvl 1 glamour gear (meaning gear that gives no stat boosts and is only there for the looks).
Players mix and match it all until they find something they like, which can be anything (including nothing but a bikini, if said player prefers that).

Im not in game, so this is just speculation. If im wrong, my apologies. With that out of the way...

Its possible you have an option to upgrade your gear now without going the "He-Man" route. My advice would be to go to the market board and search for armor(chest and pants cover most of your body) at or near your current level. There may be an intermediate option that you missed with a more pleasing aesthetic. If not, the first set of dungeons(sastasha, copperbell, and tam tara) have some armor drops which i believe are full coverage. And now that im thinking about it, the first thing you should do is complete the Hall of the Novice training sessions. They give you a full set of armor thats at your level and decent, and again i believe its a non-he man look(plus a ring thats really nice - seriously do these for the ring even if you dont like the armor). And even if youre an MMO veteran, it never hurts to get a refresher on some of the basics and how this particular game handles them. The Hall is located in western la nosca just outside Aleport - across from the entrance to Sastasha. You can also get sent there by the Smith NPC in any town - usually found in the inn.

I know i wasnt there, but im basically 100% confident this was a personal choice made by the player of that character. Even if it was somehow their best armor(which isnt likely - i cant think of any sets that even remotely fit that description), they chose not to glamour over it with something else, and they chose to have their hat visible. As the others said, most high level gear is actually ornate and rarely very revealing. Glamour gear, however, can be of any number of looks - several of which dont cover what a warrior would want to protect in a fight. A choice you too will get to make one day.

A friend of mine recently leveled BRD from 1-50, and while there is a handful of extra armor that is (for whatever reason) tank+DRG only, the general physical DPS gear has you go through a leather harness phase about 4-5 times on the way to 50, including dungeon gear. So even if he can skip the one below 20, there is another one in the 20s, 30s, 40s and so on. You can't escape subligars and leather harness xD

Ah, thanks for the info. To clarify, the level 6 armor referred to just the chest piece, which I finally was able to replace. The chainmail is fine, but I can't seem to find much in the normal shops. I haven't tried the market board, as I kind of just assumed free trials would be blocked from using it. I'll have to double check, though. Either way, as I was hoping, it seems that it won't be a real issue. I'll have to try to find this Hall of the Novice area as well. I'm definitely an MMO veteran, but loot's loot!

Just follow your main story quest, it will soon lead you to your first dungeon. The Hall of the Novice is right outside of it and the quest will even suggest you visit it before you enter your first dungeon, so it's hard to miss ^^

Sorry, but the trial version does not allow you to buy or sell on the Market Board :x Or trade with other players, for that matter.
Low level gear on the MB is usually way too overpriced anyway, though. Just rely on quest rewards, dungeon gear drops and gear vendors outside the 3 big cities. All low level gear is obtainable from NPC vendors after all,
the ones who have the appropriate gear are just sometimes hard to find since they are in the several outposts and camps somewhere on the maps.

At level 15, you can do Hall of the Novice training to get a set of relatively great lv 15 gear meant to jump start players in dungeons (which start lv 16 I think). I believe the lv 15 gear set is not subligar. I remember it looking quite nice actually. Additionally, you get a very nice ring that gives an XP boost up to lv 30. The Hall of the Novice training will give you training meant to demonstrate some very basic group combat mechanics, which is useful if you've never done much group play in an MMO before.

    To enter, look for the Smith NPC at any of these locations;

    New Gridania (x11,y13)
    Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (x11,y11)
    Ul'dah - Steps of Nald (x11.8,y:9)
    South Shroud (x19,y18)
    Central Shroud (x10,y22)
    Central Shroud (x19,y28)
    Western La Noscea (x28,y24)
    Western Thanalan (x27,y16)
    Eastern Thanalan (x14,y30)

Would you settle for only occasionally looking like He-Man the Barbarian? Until reaching 50, I kept two gear sets on hand for any class whose current gear I found ugly. One set would have whatever gave me the best stats. Another would have something slightly below it in stats, but which I liked the look of better.

A great deal of quest content is fairly simple. Stats don't matter when your objective is to go talk to an NPC, and you can usually get away with less than stellar stats when you need to go kill a couple open-world mobs. So a lot of the time, it's perfectly fine to wear gear that's a tier or so below your current stuff, just for the sake of being able to like the look of your character while you do so. But then you should also have a more up-to-date set that you can switch to that will give you good stats when you get to something that's difficult enough to require it.

I found that gear for Disciples of War in particular tended to alternate between a good looking set, then an ugly one, then another I liked the look of. That worked pretty well for this two gear set pattern, because even when the attractive set I used for most open world questing was below my level, it didn't need to be all that far below. I don't know if that will be the same for you, since our tastes may not match, but there seems to be a fair amount of variety at least. (It's harder with Disciples of Magic, who have far less variety in the looks of early-level gear.)

And for your current level, yes, the set you get from doing the Novice training should do you well both for stats and quite likely for looks as well (though of course the later is subjective). Talk to the Smith NPC at the Adventurer's Guild of any of the main cities to start the lessons, then go through each of them.
