I mentioned this in an earlier post, so I'll post the pictures this time.
The above image is the current i270 DRK weapon, as we know the glow effect is wispy and yellow. The image below is the final form of the DRK weapon. It's clear that the glow effect becomes soild and more pronounced, as well as changes color (purple for DRK cause their soulstone I believe)
Another thing to note, the entire questline is about creating a weapon with a soul, a living weapon. The glow effect is representative of the soul, which is why the base weapon is so simplistic. The emphasis is on the glow effect, not the weapon itself.
when i first saw the warrior Axe i was like: This is a bug right? This is no weapon.. its a plastic toy.

I feel sorry for NIN/DRK/WAR, their animas look so boring.![]()
DRK at least looks modestly cool. I still feel like the design is lazy, but less so than the NIN and WAR. DRK at least resembles something, even if that "Something" is all just re-used assets. NIN and WAR meanwhile not only look even lazier, but boring besides. WAR is just this dinky little Labrys with some flame-effects, like a cheapened version of the old Zeta. It's really pathetic when you compare it to the new PLD Anima. And then the NIN just looks like... a plain pair of daggers with a glow. The glow doesn't even add to the look like all the other weapons, even WAR. It's just... a glow.
I do admit I am a tad confused on some relics, like the DRK and WAR they look amazing and badass, but then its like they fizzle out and we end up with a basic design. The DRK is still nice looking but I don't think it is anywhere near as amazing as the previous stages and I feel.
This has been the theme since the original relic questline in ARR. The glowy stuff is the soul of the weapon - sure.. .Doesn't mean the weapon has to look like an Iron Labrys or dual-wield Iron Gladius....
Compare the latest model with Ragnarok for WAR or Sasuke's Blades for NIN (which is probably my favourite weapon design for NIN) as a final step and you should understand. The glows were still fairly flashy and well defined, but the weapons didn't look fresh out of Battlecraft NPC in Limsa marketplace..
They were both also rather "simplistic" but obviously had quite a decent amount of work put into designing them.
To me it's rather apparent that a lot of the weapon designs were rushed, too much focus was spent on the glow effects, and that they were trying too hard to be creative and produce something different.
The texture pattern and detail on some of those base models is dirt poor. It looks like they were copy+paste out of an old MMO like FF11.
Do the glows look good / have some effort put into them? Sure (most of them). The base models is what really bothers a lot of people, myself included.
