    About Global Servers / グローバルサーバーについて

Global servers are a defining characteristic of online SE games and one that draws me to them: playing with the world, particularly JPNs.

As some may know, there was a huge outlash in Japan when SE first allowed "gaijin" (read: outsiders) on their servers in FFXI. Many quit and never came back.

Some of this was for good reason. When the first batch of "ZOMG FF" Americans landed in FFXI's servers, they were rude, and did not observe many of the common respects that Japanese players had been offering to one another for a long time before we showed up. Japan tends to be a very polite and respectful society, even in an online setting, and that doesn't always mesh well with American behavior.

At the same time, it opened a lot of opportunities: After the initial batch of rude flavor of the month players left, American's learned how to say "ohayo," and started trying to bridge the gap between the cultures. The Japanese had an opportunity to practice their English, which is actually something most of them really enjoy and sometimes pay big money to do.

With that said, Japan tends to be an extremely xenophobic society (see: nihonjinron), and will curl up in their ball of "leave us to our closed society," given the opportunity. If these Japanese Language servers are opened, you will be lucky to see one JPN on any other server.

So, I, for one, say force them to play with us. Force us to play with them. Intercultural relations and friendships are some of the most mind opening and cultivating experiences one can have in life. (I can say this, my wife is JPN)

Thanks for the read, and I hope the devs will consider these opinions.

No. I do not want to seek a party and then JP kick me because its a "JP ONLY" party. SE is giving us a choice. Do not force anything.

This is why i love yoshi. He is giving us BOTH what you want and what i want. You should learn people are different.

So Devs please do listen to opinions and not just one side of them. Best way is to give us a choice like you are currently doing.

    @ DNO..

You still have a choice in global servers. The only difference is that it is full of more varieties. I'm positive in the future the search functions for party making and seeking will allow players to set their language of choice, or set multiple languages as a matter of fact when seeking.

You delight in things Japanese enough to name your character with a Japanese honorific (sensei) and then want nothing to do them. That doesn't add up to me. Life is about bridging differences, not exacerbating them.

By the way, don't fool yourself into thinking he is doing it to give you what you want. He is doing it to entice JPNs to stick around, for which he will reward them with the opportunity to get the heck away from the Americans. This has nothing to do with any country other than JPN.

But, just like a child that refuses to try something and then once he does decides it's his favorite thing to eat, a little coercion can go a long way.

Only once in my entire career was I booted from a group on the grounds of JP Only.

I then watched as their replacement Bard showed up with Aquarius following behind him, and laughed as he lolled through the group spamming {Help me out!}.

There is an increasing demand for Japanese to be good in English for their daily work.
I expect this xenophobia-thing to become rarer by the day.

I will probably get jumped for saying this, but I don't necessarily mean it in a bad way. And sadly, it's a little known truth among XI/XIV gamers.

Japanese people are extremely racist, in general. Japan is one of the most nationalistic countries in existence. They have an overwhelming pride of what is Japan and look down on almost anyone that isn't Japanese. Now, of course there are exceptions, and Japan is by no means tiny, so when you play something like a video game that appeals to a specific group of people (gamers), you may not see the problem as much as it exists. But the fact that the Japanese community is the only community really pushing segregated servers really says a lot. Some English speaking players push for it as well, but not even close to as many English speaking players care about the issue.

There will be English servers with English speakers. There will be Japanese servers with Japanese speakers. And there will be Global servers with everyone but Japanese because a majority of the Japanese speakers will be on the Japanese servers.
