Social standing affects status, which affects reputation, which affects trust, which affects decisions and relationships.

fail strawman is fail, I did not dispute the existence of social standing, but when one's "social standing" in a "gaming circle" comes to dictate what one does IRL, well, let's just say the guy has much bigger issues to deal with.

Ok, thanks for clarifying, and I agree with you that someone affected by peer pressure has bigger issues to tackle. Imagine for a moment the life of someone with such issues to tackle. What are the odds that they will suddenly be galvanized to tackle them over this? It's far more likely, in my opinion, that peer pressure will play out differently for them. I wonder, though someone would never come post it here, whether anyone dropped the game in a situation like that.

The mocking is invalid. Most reviews are poor and the people too little to no time to get past level 30 to try any higher level content. Some reviews are true, but there is an all around lack of effort to review FFXIV just like FFXI, maybe because we don't pay them. If you read mmorpg.com or any site the comments are like "omg that game sucks just scrap it" they have little to no understanding of the type of game the people who pay XIV want and can't understand why we wouldn't just cop out and play WoW or Aion or LoL even. They think that we're insanely stupid for wanting to play an mmo of this genre anyway. They couldn't understand why we'd pay a sub for this game, but not a sub to get COD map packs. They haven't pick up the game, because it doesn't appeal to them and they couldn't see why someone would pay for a game they don't like because they think eveyone likes whats they like. Its egocentrical, but these new gamers who came out of the early 2000s now think they're the only legit gamers in the world just because their games were dumb enough to the point where "ANY ONE" could play it. So the fact that theres a genre of gaming which takes time and some thought fills them with this odd rage like "OMG you play gay games who cares if theres strategy its not about strategy its about getting to max level in a week and having my gear outdated every month" its ridiculous. Not everyone thinks this way, but those willing to speak their opinion on the average mmo website do.

It was a pleasant surprise when I found out that most of my coworkers were into gaming too. We were talking about our favorite genres: FPS, simulators, etc., and then it came the turn of our favorite MMO. Sure the name of WOW came a lot, but since I didn't play it, I asked them:

-Hey, why do you guys think about FF14? I've been thinking to give it a try.

Everyone looked at me with a face full of surprise, though it wasn't mocking or insulting; they were more as if you see someone reach for a sandwich in a cafeteria, and then you see the contents are green and spoiled, so you try your best to warn him:

-Don't do that man! The game is terrible.
-Yeah, there are better games you can try.
-Trust me. I played in beta and SE didn't change a thing. Really lousy gameplay.
-It's just graphics, Everything else in the game just sucks!
-I've never read a single positive review of that game, so I can't say if it's good.

To be honest, I didn't expected this kind of response. Sure, I've read that when FF14 came out there was a really bad reception, but I thought that after half a year, things would go better. Anyway, nobody insulted, mocked me nor made a childish comment. It was just a dozen people who had a very bad opinion of FF14.

Anyway, I always loved the FF series since I played FF VI through FFX. I never got the chance to try FFXI so I decided to give FFXIV a change. THe news of patch 1.18 convinced to finally buy the game and trust me: it was the best decision I've ever made. I got so much fun the first month that I was planing to convince everybody else in the office to try the game....except that a month later all the excitement was gone: there wasn't enough FF content, lvl up was repetitive and boring, all the crafting jobs were the same and they were such a drag to do (countless and countless of repetitive actions can drive anyone insane!!!) and the worst part: not matter how much I've invested in upgrading my game rig, the game still lagged pretty bad.

Thank God for patch 1.19 and now I was truly motivated to get everyone into the game... then I read the p2p notice and was shocked: How could SE do this at this time when all the big games are coming out?. Funny thing, I was reading the news at work, and someone behind me said:

-See? Now SE is gonna charge all those few people who still play for a unfinished product. Aren't you glad I told you not play it all those months ago?

Frankly, I was caught off guard, and all I could say was:

-Well, it says here that in a year the game will get a major overhaul, making drastic changes and practically creating a new game. Supposedly, everything will be incredible in december 2012.

-Pfft! Who's gonna care if a bad game changes to good in a year?

His answer left me cold: I know I will care in a year and keep playing FF14 until it turns good and I'm pretty confident a big size of the current players will still care too... but will it be enough to help relaunch the game in 2012? Will there be enough people interested in playing this game, after 2 years of bad publicity?

I didn't know that they were going to switch the client and server over AFTER the PS3 release. I thought they were only going to be Beta Testing it first, and then transferring everything over BEFORE the release... if I'm not mistaken.
