It isn't a bad idea when content is current...but when people outgear content and are helping out lesser gear people it becomes a huge problem if pushing too much DPS becomes a wipe. I am reminded of balancing events in EQ1 where you had to keep stuff within X% of each other where X was generally between 3-5, it was fine when it was new but once we outgeared it we spent most of the time waiting around which isn't exactly engaging
