To be fair, on the front of SAM I do recall Yoshi stating he sees it more as a DPS than a tank, however for all we know they may have talked him into changing his stance on it.

I think this applies to roles as well.
Remember he is the director and producer, of course he has his visions on the game. But I'm sure he trusts his battle team enough to discuss these things. I do know this exact interview but people forget that he has thoughts on it being a tank as well and branding it "Shogun" which I think is pretty rad!
Exactly. We don't need more of anything, we have enough of everything. We got more jobs to keep the game interesting and add variety for all roles.I like this "we have enough tanks" argument that crops up, as if 3 melee DPS isn't enough either by this logic. No, adding a 4th positional-based DPS would certainly make for a vastly different playstyle against NIN, MNK and DRG...
If people want SAM as a DPS (even though it's unlikely; the job was close to being HW's tank over DRK, losing out due to not being compatible with the expansion setting) that's one thing, but trying to argue that 3 tanks is enough yet a 4th melee wouldn't be overkill is silly.
Edit: I mentioned this in the tank thread but I would also like to bring it up here, and hear thoughts about it. I'll quote myself.
I was thinking, if SAM is released and is a DPS. And we only get 2 DPS in this expansion, what would that mean for 5.0? Surely we would get a Tank and Healer? But a big argument people make about adding DPS is their appeal and their selling point for new players, as DPS is the most open and have the least responsibilities (In casual content). Going by this logic 5.0 would either see 3 new jobs AGAIN or 2 new jobs... and 1 would have to be a DPS. Leaving either Tank or Healer in the dark for FOUR YEARS. This doesn't seem like a healthy decision for the game.

I mean, it may work if it turns out SAM can be DPS or Tank mainly in title change alone and the skills abilities are retooled only to be what the stone is set as. Kinda like SMN/SCH but in a way that the skills do not change and level together. Your basic DPS rotation becomes your basic hate rotation and then on, some DPS increasing skills become Defensive based on soulstone. I dunno honestly, I mean I wouldn't argue if they did a Shogun + Samurai for two different roles but seems unlikely to me to have 2 similar named jobs.
I know what you mean, they could have Shogun as a Tank and Samurai as a DPS, would work, make them separate jobs but share some lore. Like you said though, I doubt that will happen, at least not in 4.0, we'll get one or the other, but it would be nice to see the other crop up again in the future so we could have Shogun and Samurai co-exist.I mean, it may work if it turns out SAM can be DPS or Tank mainly in title change alone and the skills abilities are retooled only to be what the stone is set as. Yeah my argument about adding more dps does work lol because guess what...there are way more damage dealers in the FF numerical series then tanks.
We are missing many DD jobs from classic FF. This game still does not have a dagger class (not katana, DAGGER) it does not have a 2H sword DD just to name a few...so agaiiiiiin....we have sword and shield (knight) we have a 2H sword tank and an Axe tank. Now, which are we still missing?
As Yoshida said a couple days ago and in 2015, he needs to add what is most desired by the players. He said he hired those 2 devs (matsuno and the shin megami tensai dev) not only to make specific content but to help him to remember he needs to add what people are asking for. And as it stands now it clearly looks like more people want SAM as a DPS.
with i agree in this case add 2 versions of samurai to make happy all i dont think have a archanist of him go to be a solution, one of the mains problems that make this desing is you can't buff or nerf freely without affect the other how is fine.
i dont think we go to get another DPS in this expansion and if we get SAM only can go to tank, but i belive can be good to get a DPS version more late or the next expansion.
thats not really true, at least in NA english forums a SAM dps is more or less more wanted, but in japanese forums SAM tank is a lot more acepted, ppl want samurai but is SE how decide the role and how make it, if it they do what we read here sure the game die the next day.

MMOs aren't the same as single player, turned-based affairs, hence different rules are applied to them. In fact, even within the single player games recurring Jobs weren't just the exact same thing every time but were adapted in accordance with the direction and game in question. SAM, if it comes in in XIV, would be no different - even more so as it's being put in a MMO environment.
Furthermore as far as Jobs being added, I'd rather see the roles they fill be based on being able to bring something substantial to the table compared to what's present and not so they fulfill frivolous requests/quotas like "we need a 2H Sword DPS" or "we need a Dagger user"
Also of course the majority are going to want a popular Job to be cast as a popular role, that hardly means anything. I'm sure if people had their way they'd want PLD, WAR and DRK to be reassigned as DPS Jobs too.
