The main theory I have is that it is because Yoshida said he wanted to add swimming to FFXIV and a while ago there was talk of adding blitzball to the gold saucer because apparently people liked that terrible minigame for some reason. Swimming, water, and Blitzball were pretty major themes in the world of FFX. That's the connection I'm speculating on.
