The purchase of something, using RL currency, to obtain some form of advantage over someone who is not making such a purchase. That something could be an in game currency of some sort, or something else for use in game.

Retainers are "Rent to Win" because they confer an advantage over someone who does not have them. This jump potion is Pay to Win because it confers an advantage over someone else starting and not buying it.

I'm sure you have specific examples of more egregious Pay to Win in mind, but those examples do not diminish the Pay to Win nature of the jump potion revealed in the first post here.

What advantage exactly are they gaining??? I asked this to a poster before and it boiled down to "They didn't have to do the MSQ" ....so their advantage is loss of content?

Having the old quests give even more EXP (which you may as well just use the boost potion for the same effect) isn't going to solve the issue of the player needing to slog through all the quests. I fail to understand why this so called solution keeps popping up.

True pay to win involves buying an advantage over people in regards to end-game content and pvp, usually by buying overpowered gear and abilities. Getting a paid boost to lvl 50 or 60 when the expansion comes give no such advantage over people that are just better than them as players.

Again your comment shows you don't understand TRUE pay to win. You take it way to literally.

    From Yoshi's statement:

Furthermore, at the moment we also distribute weapons at a certain item level to go along with this, as well as multiple silver chocobo feathers, which can be exchanged for item level 130 equipment of your choosing. This will equip that job with the minimum equipment needed.
Edit: I'll grant it could be a typo. But assuming it's not, it's 130.

As I said, I'm sure you have more egregious examples in mind, and you obliged by touching briefly upon them. And also as I said, they do not change the nature of the jump potion.

Pay to win, however, is not limited solely to "end game and pvp". Nor is it limited to merely "overpowered gear and abilities", as you acknowledge by your use of the word "usually". Attempting to limit it, when it is not so limited, is giving you blinders.

Are you asking the purpose of the jump potion?

And your comment only shows you have a rigid understanding of pay to win, and can't recognize when something's exploitative if it doesn't fall neatly within your personal definition.

The problem of MSQ gating remains, and jump potions do nothing to actually solve the real problem. They force new players to make up for SE's flawed design at their own expense, and any new player that doesn't purchase one will be punished for it, as this gives SE a reason to continue to ignore the issue and let it become worse over time.

This has been fun to read , Im fine if some1 feels they wanna skip passed the msq. I myself never would. the msq in this game is so linear that there should be something to speed that up for those that want to get closer to newer content. Lvling pots wont matter either, it doesnt even take THAT long to lvl up to 50. They still have to lvl from 50-60 or 60-70 when 4.0 hits. Im not sure why it matters that some1 is given i120 gear,,it just gets them to 53 and then they buy MB gear anyway. I wouldnt call getting i120 gear pay to win, thats more like me spending my nights raiding for 270 gear but billy over there can get i270-i280 gear buying it with rl money, and i cant get anything over i270 by doing content.

So I'll continue raiding with my friends, and hoping that everyone else enjoys the game however they see fit to do so, it doesnt directly effect me, and the complaint of bad players,, well theres always gonna be bad players, dont be so uptight and afraid to help a new guy out!

At the end of the day, this is going to get passed. People here will throw a fit, quit, then come back. Just like everything else that went on here.
