No, server merges and closures are a sign the game is failing.Totally taking this out of context, but you must have missed the EQRankings days. There are STILL people who aug their gear so they can be at the top of one of those rankings.
Back on topic, the whole idea of a jump potion is just stupid for most of the world, given how YOUNG this game is. Putting it in for the whole world would be an admission that the game IS FAILING.
Let me say that again. This sort of service means that the GAME IS FAILING. Its already reached its peak and failed big time, and the producers are grasping at whatever straws they can find to restore the user base to something near its peak.
Oh god you couldn't be more wrong here. For one people fucking pour their lives into this game and absolutely use it to validate their self worth. Secondly while not as bad the governments we have are still extremely shitty. We're not above China or Korea at all trust me. Besides the jump potion has nothing to do with being competitive, it's for people who wanna catch up and play with their friends without doing dozens of fetch quests that's all.
The NA and EU population tend to not be as competitive as we do not use our in-game standings as validation for our existence as we do not live in countries with oppressive governments. In general our fun is the social aspect, working towards a goal as a group/team and then once obtained we enjoy the 'high' granted by accomplishment.
You will not see server closures and merges. People already complain about the ghost towns some servers are. They are locked into those unless they give SE cash. WoW actually has quite a few dead servers and no real plans to shut them down. The cross server group system that is coming is a copy of WoWs. When I ask why people stay on dead WoW server always same response cross server system is good enough to get all casual gaming done.
There were server merges when 1.0 failed. Balmung is a merged server. It used to be Fabul and Besaid. You will not see server closures and merges. The story jump potions are a bandaid fix in cash shop form. They really should have just cleaned up bits of MSQ, especially 2.1-2.5. Its the sniff the chocobo/fix my earrings/deliver food filler quests that kill the motivation to reach current content.
Did you not see the comments about the new cross server raid system and other features we are getting. It greatly reduces the need to close dead servers. Not to mention that housing is such a royal SH!T show. Makes it even harder for them to merge.
You forgot that you have to pay a subscription as well. The barrier of entry for new players is very steep indeed. And does no one on SE's staff find this scenario suboptimal? "Let me buy a game, then buy this item for use within the game that lets me not have to play through most of the game." .. What was the use of writing the skipped over sections of the game then?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Just remove all of the skipped content, and see what kind of game you've got, because that's what you are planning on charging people extra money for.
Heres the thing tho, the forums already complain there isnt enough content being created, and now you want LESS content so they have resources to streamline the MSQ?
So far the cons outweigh the pros. It would be foolish to implement something like this, although I do agree the MSQ needs to be trimmed.
I think you and many others misunderstand how much development time it would take for SE to fix a lot of these issues without resorting to a cash shop item. For any sort of content you want to do, dungeons, quests, raids, etc. There are only a couple flags. Usually two: meeting the minimum level (or ilvl) requirement, and having completed X quest. Why would it be difficult for SE to remove those flags from all previous expansion content and make it so that anyone can, on patch day, proceed with the 4.0 MSQ.
