There are some scenes during the Warrior of Darkness arc that might imply a slightly deeper interest on Alisaie's part. They occur around the Titan fight that takes place in that arc.

Bioware did a decent job with this in SWTOR MMO and in the Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effects series. The romance plot lines are very popular in SWTOR and have been used to good effect to deepen the story line.
Strangely what your asking for is basically a love doll, not romantic interests. Whats the point in a affection system if you just make the perfect waifu/husbando weeb w/e? If every npc could be a potential love interests with their own backgrounds, lore and appearances, it can build into very interesting pairings, possibly carrying into companion stuff so we can run things with them. Yeah, it will take time, like everything to make the dialogue, but that'd be them trying to make a more interactive world that doesn't just go one-way and that's it. Besides, it also means more lore.^ This right here is the main reason why we can't have any romantic interest with any NPCs.
Though you're right the game should give us the option to decide which gender, race, etc. that we wish to have romantic interest with. It could work because we have the freedom to choose whether we want to have a romantic interest/relationship with an NPC or not.
HOWEVER, it would probably take a LOOONG time for the dev team to come up with 'romantic' dialogues for the NPCs in the game XD
I pretty much envisioned the Warrior of Light to be similar to the Nobles of the Vampire Hunter D universe. Characters are drawn to the WoL/Nobles, whether they want to be or not. It's just going to happen. It's not necessarily something born out of true affection, though some may misinterpret it as such. It can also just as easily turn to envy or even hatred.
The WoL comes off like Golden Age Griffith in Berserk (as much as I absolutely hate Griffith). He has a dream and won't let anyone deny it; he's practically untouchable and people are drawn to him like a flame. However, you'd kid yourself if you thought he had any romantic interests.
I always sort of got the romantic interest vibe from minfilia personally. I feel as though if this were a single player RPG she'd be a romance option for a male character and Thancred would be an option for females.
Even if not romantically, I think a lot of people on this thread, myself included, are expressing interest in more interactions with the NPCs. Right now, most of the major NPCs show up only when there's a serious situation--they're basically walking plot devices. It's hard to feel a sense of camaraderie and care for the characters when most of your interactions with them are limited to "Oh no, we need to go deal with so-and-so primal/Garlean/random monsters, and hey, here's Y'shtola to help you out for three quests before she goes back to being a statue again!" There's not much sense of interactivity. The most you can do is sometimes oversee or overhear funny events which you are not really a part of and can't affect in any way (the old scene of Moenbryda drinking Thancred under the table comes to mind).
Creating a much wider variety of side quests and scenes in which you could choose to interact, talk with, help, etc. your favorite NPCs would be much more engaging for me. It doesn't even need to be anything world-changing--just some degree of fun interaction to help flesh the characters out more seems like it would be a lot better than what we have now.
The only story characters I saw this way died or suffered from plot removal.
Every last one of them.
Nooo, I'm referring to the NPCs that are already in the game, not completely brand new NPCs.
What I mean is that the player character can choose which already existing NPCs that they wish to romance; they would register which race, gender, etc. they prefer because for example the player is a female gender irl, but they are RPing as a male in the game - maybe they prefer to interact with only female NPCs.
EXAMPLE: The 'April Fools' Favour System
In the description, the NPCs have a preference on who they would like to date: Minifilia would like to date a midlander male, Y'shtola prefers any race as long as they are intelligent.
You see? That way, players won't fuss that their character were forced to fall for a NPC that they don't have any interest in.

I absolutely agree to every bit of this and this is exactly what I'm hoping for. The player character gets to choose which existing NPC that they wish to mingle with; whoever they pick, they get to learn everything about them.If every npc could be a potential love interests with their own backgrounds, lore and appearances, it can build into very interesting pairings, possibly carrying into companion stuff so we can run things with them. Yeah, it will take time, like everything to make the dialogue, but that'd be them trying to make a more interactive world that doesn't just go one-way and that's it. Besides, it also means more lore.

I wouldn't mind them adopting something similar to SWTOR did with NPC interaction. Heck, I wouldn't mind doing Side-Quests to learn more about their background and such to get involved with them a bit as friends.
