Alphinaud is the closest thing.

I'd have my character shaved before having anything close to romance with Betanaud. -_-
We need an affection system, possibly something similar to SAO Hollow Realization but without the broken mechanics. Maybe some fetch Quests with the occasional talk sequences and walks together, idk.
Why? Seems like needless fluff that won't really do much for the characterization and it could bring it off the rails if done poorly. It's also more script writing the devs have to write where you'll never see the other options unless you Youtube it.I'd have my character shaved before having anything close to romance with Betanaud. -_-

Japan is known for its harem "fluff" so there wouldn't be many occurrences of players being unable to do so. In SAO the player had as many chances as they wanted to to romance every character they wanted. Only special characters had unique scenarios so that'd be an adventure of itself.
Btw, anything can be done poorly. Like housing, Diadem, Dungeons, its the thought that counts and the effort given supports it.
The problem with affection systems is that it becomes a matter of telling the NPC what they want to hear to get into their pantsu. And that's what I honestly don't like about systems like that. See Waifu Emblem: Husbando Awakening. Just have 2 units stand next to each other while taking friendship drugs and bam, they have a baby. It's robotic and unnatural. Yes I want Cid to love me just as much as he loves machines but not from doing 5 or so quests and then that being it.I'd have my character shaved before having anything close to romance with Betanaud. -_-

Its just an affection system, not a baby making simulator. It could simply be for making really close bonds with npcs, unless that's what you wan't, I'm not judging. Though if you needed a good example of an affection system, look at the Harvest Moon franchise. It doesn't take 5 quests, it takes time, gifts, and you can't over crowd them 24/7. Actually its somewhat the same in SAO HR.The problem with affection systems is that it becomes a matter of telling the NPC what they want to hear to get into their pantsu. I won't go into details on how it would exactly work since its unlikely but yeah![]()
I believe there is a Miq'ote outside the Bismark in Limsa Lominsa (or somewhere near there) who makes very suggestive remarks about you every time you talk to her.
I think she was part of a quest at some point and I was very surprised to see those remarks.
There are some NPC that flirt with the WoL (one sentence), but aside from the JP version of Haurchefant, I dont think any NPC is romantically interested, which is a little odd, since the WoL is very famous. I do understand why we dont have an official love interest, because unlike main FF games, the WoL is our character and the last thing some of us want is to be paired with a NPC whos race, gender or personality that we might dislike.
I would love to see a romantic love interest for the WoL, but the only way it would work in this game is, if we have the option to pick the race and gender of the character. Otherwise you will have straight male players with female avatars forced into a relationship with a male NPC or a gay male player forced into a relationship with a female etc.
Romance can work, but only if we the players can decide the love interest.

So something similar to the Path Companion which I WISH had the chance to play 1.0. I bought FFXIV 1.0 but my computer specs couldn't handle it and I waited to save up money to buy a gaming PC myself or build it, but by the time I got it, it was already too late and 2.0 was here. I also wanted to see the PS3 version released at the time.
Still they could have SOMETHING like groupie or avid fans of the WoL whom screams of joy are heard whenever they see or talk to the WoL. I don't mind no romantic interest, but I want to see something interesting or funny due to our WoL's popularity and be put in some unusually situations.
Kinda wish they made that April Fools joke real, the Favor System, with you "bond" with the major NPCs and have romantic connections with them:

^ This right here is the main reason why we can't have any romantic interest with any NPCs.the WoL is our character and the last thing some of us want is to be paired with a NPC whos race, gender or personality that we might dislike.

Though you're right the game should give us the option to decide which gender, race, etc. that we wish to have romantic interest with. It could work because we have the freedom to choose whether we want to have a romantic interest/relationship with an NPC or not.
HOWEVER, it would probably take a LOOONG time for the dev team to come up with 'romantic' dialogues for the NPCs in the game XD
