Because traditionally RDM has no traits whatsoever that would make it viable as a tank. It is a DPS swordsman (fencer at that) that uses offensive black magic and healer white magic. XI broke the trend by giving it support abilities (still not tank) and having it fill a support role with refresh, haste, slow etc.

The ONLY time that RDM has been a tank is very loosely in XI. When people say that RDM could be a tank in XI, they are highly exaggerating this fact, and its about equivilent to having a WAR go DPS in this game, or having a SMN tank with titan.

It is not impossible for RDM to be a tank (after all DRK was, and that is the least tank-like job I can think of) but it would involve such a bastardisation of the jobs core that it would no longer be RDM anymore.

You should really have omitted RDM from this poll as it has been all but confirmed at the NA fan fest (scarlet witch, yoshi P is fooling nobody)

Then there's SCH, who traditionally have been able to use both White and Black magic and have never had a pet before.
If the Dev's want to make RDM a tank, they can. :-B
If you personally don't want RDM to be a tank, just say so. >w>

To add to this, I also did not like DRKs implementation. Soul eater doing the exact opposite of its signature function, and the job being MP drain rather than HP drain seemed off to me, but like I said, the devs can do what they like. My point is that nothing points to RDM being a natural tank, and they would need to bastardize the job (like they did with DRK and apparently SCH) in order to force it into the role, and then we get the "its not my RDM" and the "its just mystic knight" threads (mystic knight would be a far better suited magic tank btw).

A mix of magic types defines a lot of jobs, what defines RDM is its ability to fill the niches of BLM, WHM, and WAR (the DPS one, not the tank) as a jack of all trades between melee and magic dps, and healing, as well its ability to provide support to other players in XI. What you are thinking of is mystic knight which specialises in using a mix of magic types on itself to imbue its weapon either offensively or defensively.
