That means I'd have to go to the menu instead of simply switching jobs, and changing to the appropriate look. As often as I change jobs, it's disruptive to the flow of gameplay and discourages me from playing other jobs, which I enjoy doing.

I don't even spend much time in menu, I can change jobs straight from my hot bar.
... then make it so outfit sets can be put on hotbars, too? Like gearsets? Oh no, you'd have to click two buttons on occasion! The horror. That's definitely worth refusing something that would bring a lot of people much pleasure.

You're still contradicting yourself, though. You claim you prefer having the same outfit across multiple jobs, and then you complain that when you change jobs, you want to change your costume.

Regardless which Thunda Cat wants under which circumstances, it's certainly true that there are players with each of those preferences, so lets try to adjust the suggestions to accommodate either. How about this version:

A player could have as many glamour sets as they can gear sets, but they're set up separately. Gear sets can be linked to glamour sets, but it's not a hard-coded 1 to 1 link. One player might have Gear Set 1 linked to Glamour Set 1, Gear Set 2 linked to Glamour Set 2, and so on through all of them, but another player could have Gear Sets 1, 2, and 3 all linked to Glamour Set 1 and Gear Sets 4 and 5 linked to Glamour Set 2, allowing players with one or several favorite appearances to re-use them with multiple classes/jobs.

We'd have an option (defaulted to on) of whether or not to automatically switch to the linked Glamour Set whenever we switch Gear Sets, but regardless of how we set that option, we'd also be able to directly select and switch to a different Glamour Set even without switching Gear Sets.

An interface like your photoshopped example would be used for setting up the Glamour Sets or manually switching between them. (Switching between them could also be done with a macro command.) An empty gear slot within a glamour set tells the system to show your equipped gear without glamour. (There might also be a single special Glamour Set that isn't customizable like all the others are, in which all its gear slots are empty, telling the system to turn off your glamour and show all your equipped gear.)

The link between Gear Sets and Glamour Sets would be set whenever you save a Gear Set. It would remembering not only what gear you have equipped as it does now, but also which of your Glamour Sets is equipped (but not the specific items in that Glamour Set). For instance, if you saved Gear Set 1 while you had Glamour Set 2 active, then later changed the items in Glamour Set 2, the next time you switch to Gear Set 1, you'd get the appearance of the new items now in Glamour Set 2. This way somebody who wanted the same glamour for all their DoH classes, for example, could change it once and if all their DoH Gear Sets are linked to that same Glamour Set, that change would be active for any of them.

I think that accommodates a variety of desires. Players who want each class/job to have its own appearance can do so by assigning different Glamour Sets to each. Those who want to share an appearance across multiple classes/jobs without re-creating it separately for each can do so by linking several Gear Sets to the same Glamour Set. Those who want to switch out appearances when they're not changing their actual gear at all can do so by manually selecting a Glamour Set. Those who want to leave their glamour appearance alone even when switching gear can do so by turning off the automatic switching option.

And since we seem to have strayed quite a way from this thread's original topic, where do glamour prisms fit into this whole scheme? I wouldn't get rid of them. I'd suggest still using them when applying appearances to those glamour sets. But given the flexibility of this system, and greater ability to switch out appearances on the fly by just selecting another of your already saved glamour sets, I suspect there would be less incentive to want to re-glamour stuff when you're out doing stuff and not conveniently near a market board or your retainers. Maybe that's enough to somewhat ease the OP's inconvenience concerns.
