I think they expect a drop off in population, which is why they will give the 2.0 game away for free if you own the current one and give a free trial when 2.0 is out of testing stages. Most MMO players are flaky, they jump around between MMOs, play one for a couple months, quit, go to the one that they sorta liked that got an update, get bored, quit again, try the next big shiny, get disappointed, quit, etc.

If they advertise this game, (they are committing to an E3 showing) most people will probably remember about the free trial and try it even if they leave now. If they don't, that's their choice but the option is there.

Semantics. It's free for the individual that wants to try it without spending a dime on this "new" version.

The forum poll is currently at 41%, so I guess this is a good estimation. Out of interest though how many people does the game have to lose? I think the servers are pretty dead as it is right now.
