I pay mine in food, toys, a place to live, and health insurance. :P

But actually, that's not a bad idea. A place to live is part of it (enough to keep the kid there), but maybe if you want them to maintain things around the house, you have to bring back food and other items. Maybe each week, there's a food or other item the kid requests as payment for their services (stuffed chocobo, cookie, piece of clothing, etc), and the class of item (rarity/expense) scales with the size of your house, and what all you want the kid doing (gardens AND chocobo feeding? That'll cost you extra).

If you're happy just having the kid there, keeping the house is enough (of course, if you lose the house, the kid goes back to the orphanage). If you want services, you pay what they're asking for.

And the best thing of it is that it's really not that hard to incorporate it into the lore of the game. With the reckoning of the Calamity, many children's parents were killed, leaving them to fend for themselves at the Grand Company founded orphanages to house and shelter these unfortunate kids. And since regular folk don't have the chance at the lucrative places in the housing districts since they're adventurer only plots, what better way to give the children loving homes than to offer adventurers the chance to adopt them to their houses and care for them, with the benefit of house maintainance for the small price of giving the child whatever gifts and food they desire on a set basis, and requiring that there's a spare bed for them to sleep on?

Also, this gives Square the chance to model NPC children for each of the current playable races, since we only ever see Hyur and Miqote children right now.
