Here's a translated recap of a Gamewatch interview. The wording is a little different, so maybe I saw another different translation at that time.

If SAM was a tank, they would have to work really hard to differentiate it from DRK (at the start of development DRK was SAM, but then NIN happened and they changed it), The idea of having two jobs that are both two handed sword tanks feels like a wasted opportunity, whereas on the other hand, we have NO sword wielding DPS, let alone a DPS that focuses on heavy attacks.
I want a tank that is completely different, and while on paper SAM seems like a tank, it is such a boring and safe choice that is also very appealing in the DPS role.
List of other jobs that could potentially be a tank in the future:
Viking/Berserker (changed to differentiate from WAR)
Mystic Knight/Rune Fencer
Necromancer
Illusionist (my favourite)
Geomancer
Beast master
Skyseer/Netherseer
Hunter
or... something completely original

I still think the best course of action would be to make Samurai a base class and give it two job crystals. Yojimbo for tank and Ronin for DPS. Everyone is happy.

If it's a tank, I'd like to see something akin to the Swordmaster of Bravely Default.
He could have comboes that put him in a counter stance, to reduce damage from one type of attack and unleashing a powerful counter after that.
Since they're not happy about the branching of Arcanist, I really doubt they'll do that. In fact, I'm starting to feel that classes will soon disappear. They mentionned in the fanfest that they'll make Role actions for everything that is mandatory (Provoke, Swiftcast, etc...). If they do that, the whole idea of cross-classing will lose what little interest it's currently having.
And if you don't cross-class anymore...you don't need classes.

Believe it or not, I actually want the exact same thing as you do. I adore reflecting damage back to the attacker as a mechanic, designing a tank around that would be very appealing to me.
I still think Samurai/shogun shoulb be an off-tank, so it competes with warrior. that way people that want it to be a tank get what they want and people who wants it to be a dps also get what they want somewhat, that is if samurai pulls around the same numbers warrior does.

I actually hate the idea of having tanks assigned to a position, all tanks should perform well in the OT position in different ways (PLD by buffing, DRK by debuffing, and WAR by damage), this is the reason that the current meta exists, because WAR is competent in the MT position (because it has to be), but also excels in the OT position, and SAM will be the same.I still think Samurai/shogun shoulb be an off-tank, so it competes with warrior. that way people that want it to be a tank get what they want and people who wants it to be a dps also get what they want somewhat, that is if samurai pulls around the same numbers warrior does.
I can guarantee that if they made SAM the counterpart for WAR, then SAM/WAR compositions will be the norm (unless the jobs are changed drastically).

well yoship did say they are going to bring the other tanks up to war lv as best as they can.I actually hate the idea of having tanks assigned to a position, all tanks should perform well in the OT position in different ways (PLD by buffing, DRK by debuffing, and WAR by damage), this is the reason that the current meta exists, because WAR is competent in the MT position (because it has to be), but also excels in the OT position, and SAM will be the same.

the thing is, either way, warrior needs some sort of competition, just like scholar. And while I agree that a different tank style would be better, * please no tank jobs that use the pets as tanks... thats a terrible idea and probably anyone who think thats a good idea never tried to tank more difficult stuff with titan egi * Samurai is still the most popular job that could fill that role.
Btw... pretty sure dragoon and black mage can be considered heavy hitting dps...

Yes I know classes are disappearing. And i'm really not happy about it.
1. Each class has very strong lore ties to the city states they appear in. This is less true for the jobs.
2. It would be pretty dumb to be chosen as the resurrector of a legendary ancient fighting style when you are still level 1 and can barely hold your weapon.
3. Traits, hunting logs and skills from leveling up are all things that classes have and jobs don't.
4. Just handing you a new job with the hotbar half filled with skills just creates a needless mess. Especially since PotD already requires the HW jobs to level from 1 gradually.
I know point 3 doesn't really apply to the new jobs but the end result was just weird.
I may be the only one but I want classes to stay.
