Body language matters in the real world, not a video game. Just say thank you. We don't need an emote to do something that can be done with five keystrokes.... What the hell?
I never implied that I am averse to socializing nor that we "need" an emote to replace text-based interaction. On that subject, a vast majority of our communication is actually through body language, not through spoken words. You can still convey meaning through your actions in addition to what you say vocally.
Non-verbal communication IS a form of socialization. Beyond that, no one is obligated to communicate in a single manner.
Except this is a game played by real people who use keystrokes to move their characters. Like, it's not as precise, but you actually CAN tell a person's mood through what they do with their characters. It's never going to be as crystal clear when interacting in the real world, but neither is text, so yes, it does matter.
It really doesn't.Except this is a game played by real people who use keystrokes to move their characters. I don't feel like I have to when you unironically think body language matters in a video game with text chat. You might have a point with something like Second Life or some future game where our bodies have one to one control over our avatars, but when the extent of our movements involves jerkily shuddering from side to side or jumping up and down while we wait for the last person to be done watching a cutscene, or typing canned emotes that are often more keystrokes than just saying the message they're trying to get across, you make zero sense.
Jumping up and down while we "wait for for the last person to be done watching a cutscene" doesn't say anything? To me, that can suggest impatience; the person behind the keyboard is preoccupying themselves due to a lack of anything to do at the moment. :P
While I suspect you are uninterested, refusing to back up your own claims by dismissing the other party's idea as ridiculous is a very cheap, easy thing to do and it kind of undermines any sort of debate. Come now, you can do better than that.
I don't know what a "women's studies" is but does it have a version for women to study men, and are they topless?
Also, not be rude but you might not want to dismiss art majors. Guess what the people who made this game probably did to land their job in SE, lol...

The forum is already cluttered with BS, always has been, always will...because people like to whine and cry about everything.
If it REALLY does bug you that much, don't quote me on this, but I think you can add him to ignore list and it may clean the forums for you.
Personally I never will do that because the drama on here is comical especially reading them at work.
The Native American hat thing was killing me for days.
Edit: Also that person was from Balmung....-Sighs- XDDD

Proof is on the positive claim. Prove that game emotes are accurate depictions of current, real life emotional status and sentiments, and that they have greater accuracy than the written word.
Frankly, I'd just feel like you're too lazy to type "Thank you!" and aren't as sincere.
Which is not true in the slightest, but okay.

Really, the only difference between nonverbal communication used in the real world and that in this game is the lack of complexity, due to all the subtle ticks like eye-movment, hand gesturing, and even vocal variety being unavailable or delivered in a static manner. Does this mean that the nonverbal communication doesn't matter or carries absolutely no meaning? I really don't think so.

Designers of these virtual worlds always attempt to overcome limitations in verbal and written communication through not only simulated body gesturing, but through mechanical cues as well. To say that communication in a virtual space doesn't matter actually, in my opinion, vastly overlooks the level of subtle detail that is going on between players, let alone the fact that these are people controlling these characters and projecting their mood through them, it's just in ways that is not "readily apparent," which really, no non-verbal communication is in general.
