    He chould have left at any time he wanted. He chose to stay there instead of taking the penalty, trying to exploit the system.
    It is impossible to keep someone in a duty if they choose to leave.



    Technically, from one perspective, kicking him after he refused to take the deserter penalty could be viewed as assisting in exploitative behavior...
