I think that was more for gameplay reasons since there are some job only gear that retainers back then could not equip.
Though I do think it would make a lot more sense for squads to eventually get jobs since they are working under the WoL and receiving training. The only jobs that are truly one of a kind would have to SCH since you'll need to get a stone with a fairy; BLM and WHM fall under a similar category. All other jobs are more or less institutionalized or are being spread by it practitioners.

Pretty much, but there are plenty of people who helped fight and defeat primals, specifically: Titan, Leviathan and especially Ifrit. Though I can't imagine them being low-level GC squad members, though.



The thing is that the 52-60 quests for most jobs are of the "we'll spread this knowledge to others" variety. The WAR questline in particular.
I am hoping for a lot more control over squad member growth, including giving them access to jobs along with controlling their gear appearance. It's clear that they won't let me create my perfect squad (making all the templates I saved in anticipation to this a waste), but I still want some degree of control over what goes on with the squad.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

On the flip side, the Maelstrom has Broken Mountain and Curious Gorge training their axemen as Warriors and work closely with Doma's ninjas.
It's not out of the realm of possibility.
