Of course we gave gear to people who was on a lot but it was unfair for people who been there for a while to NOT get anything, so they all ended up getting things they wanted. It was all about having a great community in the linkshell you was in and people you played with. My friend is my FC leader and believe it or not, but he cleared all savages and he works 6-10 hours a day plus 3 hours at the gym 5 times a week. You don't need to be on 24-7 to do savage in this game, it's about devoting time for maybe 3 hours a day 3-4 times a week and know how to play. Many can't do that because they aren't learning fast, this isn't about a player playing more or less. You have people playing more than me and him and still can't do things.

I get what you are saying tho, but it's kinda untrue when some people do say they don't have time to raid when they actually spend more time than MC raiders in game. It's all about how you want to present yourself in the game too.

I was pretty much an everyday player from 2.0-3.05 or so. Im one of the guys who got tired of the game and quit. I recently came back and the game is fresh to me again. What they said about quitting a game and coming back the next patch isn't what I did,I quit for SEVERAL patches.

There is no perfect balance between older generation grind and current generation instant gratification MMO's. If you make character progression like the merit point and skill point system in FF11, 3 months later only the people who have the most free time will be able meet the requirements for the latest and greatest savage content.

We know progression will be based on Gear Stats. They wont change that.
If they diversified it in 4.x that would be great. I would prefer to have several ways to attain this BiS gear.

    -- Some from Savage content..
-- Some from EXTREMELY difficult world bosses (that are popped similar to maps)
-- Some from 4 Player Savage content
-- Some from 24 man Savage content

Also, since the focus is gear rather than character development, I'd like to see the gear have interesting stats such as "increases run speed" or "chance to increase crit rate by xyz percentage for 5 seconds" some sort of extra benefit to gear sets would make it more enjoyable.

At the same time once the next content cycle comes around and those sets with the "cool bonus" become obsolete make a way you can enhance that gear to increase its ilvl.

One of the things that many players loved about FF11 was the fact you could have 1 piece of gear that lasted you YEARS. why not take that part of the game and put it in 14. maybe have special gear sets you can upgrade as the ilvl increases. they already have the glamours on lockdown so if your looking for a new look there is more than enough content..

Think you're misunderstanding my point. doing a full marathon doesn't negate a half marathon for example. the marathon stays consistent in length. so every runner that completes that marathon does the exact same challenge of 26 miles. at no point do they decide to knock the distance of a full marathon down to 20 miles so more people can complete one for example..

think of it this way. you get to 18 years old or whatever age you can learn to drive. cough up hundreds of dollars on driving lessons and tests countless hours of practice and finally you get a licence. woot! big congrats arguably the most important qualification you will ever get... However then next month for whatever reason they scrap the license system and just let anyone drive... suddenly all that time and money you ivested in getting your license is worthless..

but yeah the point is that no matter how you look at it. everyone that's completed a marathon has done the exact same distance. and because of that completing a marathon retians it "value"

nothing in the game holds any value. which is why people don't bother with the challenges

I don't remember where I read it, but I did read something about a relic style armor set being considered for 4.X. It's been a long time since I kept up with anything though so take that with a grain of salt.

They can even do this without really deviating form the game's core framework right now, by putting max-level gear back in Exploratory Missions starting with 3.5, and by providing ways to upgrade 24-man gear to max item level as well (through EX Primal tokens or something that would cement it as a "midcore" option).

I've been suggesting the latter at least since early Heavensward.

Just those two simple things would give the game two more avenues for max-level gear, one focused on time investment and the other on a more middle of the road skill investment.

I remember Yoshi saying they wanted to add a "time" avenue for gear that was like Relic, yes. What form that would take is anyone's guess, but they're looking into it.

The current generations are becoming lazier and less skilled by the year and more prone to throw money away for any kind of DLC released by the company they have become a fanboy of.

SquareEnix is trying to squeeze as much as they can with the smallest investment possible (MogStation anyone?) after the bloodbath that 1.0 has been. And what's better than alienating a horde that will keep throwing money at you to become the next fashionista?
Only courageous companies will risk creating anything different, anything new that will become the next big thing and make them do the big money. SquareEnix is not one of those. We'll probably not see any change unless a big chunk of people will turn their back at them.

So far I'll keep on playing with my friends hoping for that 2% that will make SquareEnix try anything new. They have until the next expansion before I will unsubscribe. After that I'll maybe come back when all the expansion's patches will be out, buy the latest equip from the market, explore the dungeons, catch up with the story and unsubscribe till the end of the successive expansion, because there is nothing that can keep old players glued to the game and catching up is as hard as throwing money at the board.

Seasonal minions or costumes, veteran rewards and looping dungeons where even the trash will behave under the same script are not worth my monthly fee.

Sadly we are people of the past, sons of a generation which is no more.

You do realize we're talking about video games, right? The whole point of a video game is to have fun. Maybe the people who you call "Lazy" don't find the FFXI model to be fun. Conversely, maybe all the FFXI fanboys don't find the FFXIV model to be fun. It's OK to not like a game. And you said it yourself: The devs are going to please the "horde" of filthy unwashed casuals.

TBH, for me personally, XI exemplifies everything I hate about MMO's, namely spending hours just standing around waiting.

You are induced in thinking that doing the same thing over and over is fun.

In XI you did one thing for hours. In XIV you do the same thing over and over for hours.
