Well since Yoshida basically made his stance known, are people still going to play and expect things to change?

Well, server populations already have told the answer to that. 3.4 won't heal the damage already done by Legion and this game incapability to retain players. If the expansion is announced, but no fundamental changes are coming with it in the coming months, 3.5 could potentially mean the end of this game as we know it, best case escenario, we will see a lot of server merges to try to make populations get back into healthy numbers (problem i don't expect you to understand since you play in Balmung, which basically is another game than the rest of us play) worse case escenario, we going F2P because this game, if population keeps leaking, would not be sustainable with lower populations than we have, and seems that Yoshida isn't interested in fixing that.

the game will live way past 3.5, i will say you did say *could* and nothing is impossible when you say could.

i could run into a million dollars tommorrow but most likely won't happen, the game could fail in 3.4 or 3.5, 4.0 5.0 6.0 tomorrow but the chances are pretty slim.

With this game population reaching 500k the chances of seeing server merges are not slim, are very realistic and actually, could solve many problems for several servers which are struggling. Also going F2P in case of a mayor dissapointment after expansion (HW ultimately translated into a very big dip of player population, from the activity perspective, HW was a failure as a expansion, so there is previous experience to support this) aren't slim neither, either that or what would be worse, a change in the schedule of updates, reducing developing cost and maintenance cost for this game, shorting efectively the life span of this game.

This isn't FFXI, we are not going to see a "noble" transition to maintenance mode in a decade, if things doesn't change, we will see a very problematic transition into maintenance mode in 2 o 3 more expansions.

From the population perspective, as i stated, it was. The coming months after launch of 3.0 probably saw the biggest population drop of this game history since the servers went down for 1.0... 3.1 did nothing to help either, and after that, the natural decline of players after the first month of each patch has been increasingly deeper each time. This game, is strugling to keep players playing for the entirety of the patch cycles. It has become a natural thing to hear "im taking a month or two, or even a patch of break". And when the director of the project also supports that, it means that something is fundamentally wrong with the game design.

From my standpoint I see it like this... First off, we could do with some more difficult open world content for certain. I won't deny that. Ever. We need dedicated areas for said things. Those whom are leveling or progressing through story don't need their tails ridden by a monster that can kill them in one glance. There is always a time and a place for things. Secondly, populations rise and fall in MMOs all the time. WOW, FFXI, LotRO, etc are all victims of this. You can please some of the people some of the time but you cannot please everyone all the time.

It is, in effect, impossible to do so. Yoshida knows this and he even states there are tons of things he wants to put in but can't. I am 100% certain he would love to cater to everyone but that is never going to happen. Let's be realistic here, hardly anyone has the time to dedicate to what they play now(adults at least with jobs, kids, etc.). Making things rougher is not the solution to everything. The current gear system allows new players to catch up with relative ease and veterans with obligations the ability to relax while progressing. It is rather beautiful in its simplicity actually. I know it is frustrating to log on to what seems like the same old, same old. Trust me I've not had a full set of ilvl current gear since Ironworks because of how tedious it is. But I also know the value of the system and appreciate it for what it is. Just my take on it.

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.
