There is something that non-crafters may not be taking into account when it comes to mb prices. When crafters price an item, they consider more than just the cost of the raw materials that are needed to make it. Leveling your DoH and DoL classes and gearing them is a large investment and you need to make your money back if you want to be successful.

Crafters often spend a ton of time and gil crafting their own gear and pentamelding it. I'm talking tens of millions of gil if they are buying materia off the mb (have you seen the prices for grade 5 crafting and gathering materia on the mb?!) or if they are unlucky with the rng of spiritbonding, melding, and desynthesis. Even if they avoid buying mats on the mb and do the gathering themselves to save money, they often spend dozens of hours gathering all the materials needed. Then you add the cost of crystals and repairs.

And lastly, crafters and gatherers usually price an item much higher than the price they want for it because they know that as soon as they put it on the mb they will have other players undercutting them like crazy. I almost never sell an item for the price I start out with. The markets in this game are insane sometimes. Prices can fluctuate wildly and some sellers will purposely tank the market for an item to try and push you out of it.

With that said though, are some crafters and gatherers greedy and charging outrageous prices? Yes, they are, but there are more factors at work than you might realize.
