How would you change Nocturnal AST to be competitive against SCH?

The card effects themselves can be entirely worthless. That is what is wrong. No other job has to click off buffs to play efficiently (to my knowledge). Why does Ast potentially have to give up their identity for 30 seconds to play efficiently?

Well, if buffing Balance and Arrow to a point where it grants enough group DPS to be roughly what a SCH can contribute, that might do it (including Combust and Combust II).
In the end, these two cards serve the same purpose as SCH "healing while DPSing". Throwing cards don't require you to switch off healing, in fact, with Aspected Benefic being instant and more potent, N.AST will become a way better "shielder" than SCH (especially if they buff their shields even more).

They were a bit afraid of buffing the cards until now, but I think they realize that they could more or less solve the issue this way. So, yeah, they might do it this time, who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

And please stop saying AST has no identity. All jobs form the same role has similar skills somehow. And healer damage won't be their focus for balance.

The fact that you're arguing another player what AST's strengths are is just proof their identity is poor. I don't think anyone is questioning what SCH and WHM are good at.

While not broken, its identity is extremely strong. Let's apply your logic to focusing AST as an off healer with the main healer idea being removed.
IMO, WHM being the main healer is its identity. I feel SE struggles to balance AST as a main healer due to the fact it can buff while having WHM level healing. That idea in itself is dangerous for the health of WHM and AST.

WHM= burst healing, regen
AST (diurnal) = burst healing, regen, buffs
SCH= mitigation, dps, faerie

Give AST too much healing and proper balancing, bye bye white mage due to it's additional buffing nature. I feel that AST's best chance at proper balance would be to compete with SCH simply because SCH is a strong, healthy competitor.

Nope totally disagree. No class be it Healer, Tank or DPS should be guaranteed a spot in a party.

OK for cards, but what about shields? Messing p with Noct shield can be troublesome because if they made Aspected Benefic shields more than that SCHs will be really annoyed.
