Don't forget the gates leading out of the city are named for divisions of the Twin Adders; Blue Badger Gate leads to the Jadeite Thick (Central Shroud), White Wolf Gate leads to Sorrel Haven (also C Shroud), Yellow Serpent Gate exits to Treespeak (North Shroud), and while we can't access it, Black Boar Gate, by the Lancer Guild, leads (presumably) to the East Shroud somewhere (assuming this because the guard tells you to take the ferry there instead. Probably will be an avenue to get to Ala Mihgo soon). Red Otter Gate isn't in any part of Gridania we can access right now; I assume its in the inaccessible (to quote the guard telling you off) "distinguished Gridanians" district

That would be a retcon though, as the gate naming theme in Gridania preceded the introduction of the Grand Companies into the game in 1.0 (the gate names were there from the very beginning under the Tanaka-era development team and original storyline, sans the Yellow Serpent gate which didn't actually exist, where as the Grand Companies including the Order of the Twin Adder were only added after Yoshi took over and re-purposed the storyline into the 7th Umbral Era story). Originally, it seemed the gates were actually thinly veiled references to the traditional FF mage Jobs (which also did not exist at the very beginning - Jobs were only added into 1.0 with the 1.22 patch): Black Boar Gate=Black Mage, White Wolf Gate=White Mage, Red Otter Gate=Red Mage and Blue Badger Gate=Blue Mage.

As mentioned before the Yellow Serpent Gate did not exist in 1.0, the physical location where it's now located was actually the zone line to the Market Ward (where retainers had bazaars) and the entrance to the Ashcrown Consortium's headquarters and did not lead out of the city into the North Shroud. Either way, the fact that the gates' names now do line up with the divisions of the Twin Adder is more coincidence to me at least and probably a retcon at the most. So don't think too much into it.
