I think perhaps you misunderstood me? I didn't mean whether I cast a DoT on an enemy. The issue is whether I have any negative status effects that have been cast or otherwise applied to me. This can easily happen even if I am not the main target simply by being in the AoE effect range.

Alternately, some enemies (such as the Deepvoid Slave in Darkhold) turn and use AoE abilities (like Stun) on an target not at the top of the enmity list. Any such taking of damage or having a status ailment resets the regen rate, requiring you to yet again stand still and do nothing for around 10 seconds (after all status ailments are gone) in order to begin regenerating HP/MP.
