There are more macho armor sets than you can shake a stick at, but anything feminine or elegant is criticized for those very reasons, it's ridiculous.

As for the topic in general (gloriously necro-posted though it is) there are so many mainstream games around that cater to gamers wanting strong male/masculine/macho atmosphere already, what would be wrong with a game that was more balanced? Or even, shock horror, caters more to those wishing a more feminine atmosphere?

FFXIV strikes a reasonable balance already, although as my comment about tank armor suggests, any female character wearing physical armor (as in non-caster) is pretty much stuck with masculine armor that de-feminizes the female avatar. One of the runners up in the tank gear design context was a set that was elegant and feminine for females and macho/masculine for males. That kind of dimorphism is something we need far, far more of.

In Japan on May the 5th there is a holiday for boys it's called こどもの日 (Children's Day) - This national holiday was established in 1948, as a day on which to esteem the personalities of children and plan for their happiness. It is on this day that the Japanese equivalent of the Dragon Boat Festival (端午の節句 Tango no Sekku?) is held. On this day, and for some time before it, families who have a boy in their home may fly koinobori and decorate their homes with armor or samurai dolls. Children's Day marks the end of Golden Week.

Welcome to MMO tanks. Tanks wear bulky armor comes with the contract of being a tank.

Indeed, although I feel bound to say...

I reject their reality and substitute my own courtesy of the glamour system, but it would be nice to have actual tank armor for female characters that is not simply the male armor with more internal padding to prevent the armor itself from hurting the wearer.

In Japan on valentines day, girls are suppose to give chocolate to boys and on something called White day March 14 men return the favor to girls.

While I certainly appreciate the fact that the game does provide a wide array of gear options for both genders, the one area where it falls short is at dividing those options across different jobs. It could certainly use a few more options in both directions. Some nice masculine looking DoM gear (especially for healers, but casters too) would be a great addition, as would some more feminine looking full plate tank gear.

Of the two, however, masculine healer gear is probably the most lacking. (There are at least some tank pieces that look half-way decent on female characters, despite obviously not being designed with them in mind. But for male healers, their choices are looking effeminate or using some of the level 1 glamour gear available to any class/job.)

Yeap that's correct I live in Japan I thinks it's cool that V day is two different days in Japan. Also Japan is one of the main country's that has a lot of national holidays. The Fact is this game is made by a Japanese company they are always gonna make sure that they cater to the Japanese market. Since that is like the main country that they want this game to be successful in. Once they have that market down then they will make sure that they cater two there second market which is the western market. No matter what FF game it is this thought process in Japan will never change.

I agree with you on DoM gear, although traditionally male casters have worn robes - look at TLOTR for example. Whether some tank armor looks alright on female characters is immaterial when, as you say, the pieces are *not* designed for the female form at all.

We need some masculine caster DoM gear and feminine DoW gear to balance out what we already have. I do have to say though, that the tank gear design contest offered multiple opportunities for SE to select a set that offered both male and female options, and they decided to ignore those in favor of another boring, macho gear set that might look great on a Highlander or Roe, but will make Kos look utterly stupid.
