As a healer, is it my job to DPS? A new perspective.

No, the bare minimum, is to Heal first AND do DPS. The Hall of the Novice even tells you this.
It specifically tells you to DPS when no one needs healing. That should be the bare minimum level.
If you can't follow the Hall of the Novice directions, you shouldn't be healing.

Well I've never been to the hall of novice. Besides, you shouldn't force people to DPS if it could mess them up and make them forget that their primary job is healing. The world isn't as black and white as you make it out to be.
