    Sure you're not trying to use a lvl42 tool at lvl40 or something? Because if you are below the lvl of the tool you get 0 craft 0 mag craft 0 control.

    I have a few crafting/gathering materia also probably more then what i would have got just from tools, all i can remember though is the ones i got from tools, i'm sure your correct any some gear may also convert but which it was i don remember.

    This isn't true for tools. You take a penalty for using a tool higher level than you are, but you do get a benefit. I'm currently using a level 42 leatherworker tool at level 41 and I think the penalty is something like -20 to each of the tool stats.
