Would it be a nice feature? Depends on how it works out.

Are we so sure that dye is represented in game as an RGB value and not, for example, as a bitmap indicating the color to display. I can represent 256 color values using a single byte descriptor for each armor piece. I would need six byte descriptors for suitable RGB value. Multiply that by five for the visible slot choices and I go from five bytes dedicated to armor color to 30 bytes. Multiply that by the number of players you can see on any given day in Limsa Lominsa hanging around the Aetheryte and you're starting to talk some serious memory.

Currently, I can look at what I want and then go out and craft/purchase most of the dye choices. How would I do this given an RGB scale instead of "Dalamud Red"? I think it might become a bit more expensive to craft dyes "on the fly". You choose a sunburnt orange color that combines red and yellow -- you have to now pay for two materials (in some correct relationship) to make the newly minted "sorta-sunburnt-orange" color. Or they might actually eliminate dye choices entirely and have you go to a 'dye wizard' who will do this for a fee similar to what it now costs to have materia melded.

Solvable problems, yes. But I'd vote for an inventory search feature similar to the MarketBoard search first.
