Let's take it a step further let's allow players to have this DDR style rotation on their screen at all times! Also let's let the computer just do it for them! Also let's forget about the players and just have perfect NPC allies!

Forget the whole MMO part when you can just program perfect parties. We get to watch them run the dungeons for us and we can stand in town with the gear they earned for us. It's the final evolution MMO players have been waiting for. All the reward with none of the game.

Oops, kept forgetting about HoN here...

And how did my suggestion became absolute hand-holding?

When did I say your suggestion was hand holding?

Instructions like, press "Spinning Edge" or press "Spinning Edge->Gust Slash->Dancing Edge" with explanation for what they do, why should we use them, dispersed within the tutorial. Button press instructions will of course begin from simple 1 button press
This one sentence is a good example.

I am a low level player that is sitting around level 30. I have no previous MMO experience and I have struggled to understand at times what is expected of my roles (DPS, TANK - so far).
The game is such an easy single player experience then you are awkwardly thrust into scenarios with other people without truly knowing what you should be doing. I will say that Hall of Novice helped bridge the gap a little, but I learned so much more finally joining duties and watching people and having them share advice in real time scenarios.

I think the biggest disservice in the game is that you can breeze along and not need to even talk to any other person for days if not months (if you are a father, husband, bread earner like myself who can't play all day) and then you are put in to a party and it changes the whole dynamics. Yet when you get put in a party you are playing with grumpy people who have cleared that scenario 100 times already and expect me to follow suit.

I wish the game had a way of ramping up cooperative play immediately. The idea that we are dependant on each other to survive in Eorzea instead of becoming a burden to each other because it cramps are solo play styles.

To answer the op - yes, there should be someway to train people their roles and it should be more community based and beneficial to each other as we learn and make strides as a family. It is hard to do this when you don't really need another living soul for your first 40-50 levels.

The absolute hand-holding I was talking about was how it was just assumed this sort of tutorial will just continue all the way.

And I don't see what is wrong with teaching a new player why and how he should be performing a set of combo skills, especially when it is to the benefit of the newbie and to a extend the players he/she will meet in the future.

Hear hear, give us back early days of FFXI (as in 11) where it's almost impossible to solo level past level 12 unless you were an insanely rich red mage or were a beastmaster. /notsarcasm /partiallyjoke /partiallyserious
