Never really understood the point of undercutting, myself. Surely just hurts their own profits in the long run.
Personally, I think the worst are those that list items at (or, strangely, below) NPC buy-back prices.

It's really hard to understand from an egoistical point of view, but if you view if from a more communal point of view, it makes sense - better put it on the market than vendor it, as someone might need it and they'll be happy to get it cheap. It's not a big loss for you but might be a good gain for someone else.
I love those, I buy em all up and just resell to the NPC. xD
You are confused because you are focused primarily on long-term profits. Most players are not interested in using the market board to make money over the long term. Many are just posting various items they have gotten from various sources and just want to sell them as soon as possible in order to get their profit.
