I wonder if they also have beta testers and/or focus groups with tight NDAs. I doubt that they would just go on analytics based on game telemetry.

Doubtfull it appears from quotes that they internally test content and don't even test it to proper completion. They said they tuned stuff like Alex fights with dev tools on so they could skip portions of fights and make some general assumptions on how the hardcore groups who are better than them can preform.
