You know that time travel thing AlphaFox mentioned? Its pretty much like that. The Kingdom Hearts games are in a continuity divorced from post Disney Movies and all FF titles, to the point where the FF characters are only in either newly constructed worlds not based on their games or Olympus Coliseum. Meanwhile in VIII's continuity, Cloud has already vanquished his inner Demons as per Advent Children and the process has Sephiroth die twice.

The best we coul hope for in this case would be an XV event, maybe another XI event (thought Rapshodies likely put that off limits), Legarti (Nael and Regula) with vague similarity an characters that although named after and having the general appearance of past FF characters, have their role and back-story changed to varying extents (See: Krile)

I wouldn't take what is nothing more than a spinoff which completely handwaves the appearance of FF characters in it as canon to the FF series, because it isn't canon at all. It's like saying the Star Wars Christmas Special is canon simply because Boba Fett appeared in it.

Yoshi made it quite clear why Sephiroth and Cloud will not be appearing - Sephiroth is dead and the whole FFVII Compilation is now complete so that well and truly fits into the definition of what Yoshi mentioned about "whose role ended in their title". Argue and rationalize it all you like, Yoshi stated it pretty conclusively it won't be happening (after all, we got Cloud's Advent Children attire as a Veteran Reward and not through some crossover quest, so yeah, that's pretty much the nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned).

It was established in the KH series that the FF characters you meet in the game are not the same ones from their respective game. Only their likeliness and personality are used. They do not use their exact same background. In KH, Sephiroth is the darkness in Cloud manifested in physical form. Squall(Leon), Aeris, Yuffie, and Cid were all from Radiant Garden, but after their home was destroyed and renamed Hollow Bastion, they form a group in Traverse Town and ally themselves with Sora in hoping to reclaim Hollow Bastion back and restore it.

Basically, KH is completely non-canon to the FF universe. FFXIV does follow the rules of FF's universe.
