I sincerely cannot tell if some people on these forums are trolling or not. No one, and I mean NO ONE should be forced to stay in a duty where they are being harassed and verbally abused.
No, it is not a mentor's "job" to deal with harassment from other players. To say or imply otherwise is utterly ludicrous and shows a lack of understanding and empathy for other players.
I've seen the "you signed up for this as a mentor so do your job" argument that tries to justify this too many times. What does a mentor's job consist of?
Yeah, nowhere in there says that mentors need to know everything about every fight or accept abusive behavior from other players. Yeah, sometimes you can kick the abusive player from the group. But what about when it's more than one person? Also, I don't remember if it was in this thread or another, but people have even suggested that mentors not be allowed to initiate a vote kick. Like, what even.
I haven't been a mentor for long, but I've had both good and bad experiences with sprouts and other players. It seems the most receptive people (in my experience) have been people that mostly craft in this game. It always makes me happy to see people appreciative of assistance. On the other hand, I have been on the receiving end of verbal abuse from players just for trying to help. I absolutely will not tolerate this, and will leave if I need to. I play this game to have fun, and I am *volunteering* my own free time for this sort of thing. Mentor roulette is definitely NOT a form of "payment", I'm not sure where that idea even came from, how is offering a roulette where you are expected to teach others a form of payment. That makes no sense to me at all.
Should mentors receive an extra penalty for leaving their mentor roulette immediately? Maybe. I don't think anyone should be leaving anything immediately. However, if they are being harassed or verbally abused they absolutely should not feel obligated to stay. No one should have to deal with that, mentor or not, and reporting the person only does so much good when you're in the dungeon with that person then and there. Yeah, you can report them, but why should you be forced to sit through the rest of the dungeon/trial/hest with them?
Sorry for the long post but I am tired of seeing all mentors crucified by people on these forums. Mentors are also players who pay the subscription fee, and it's unfair to act like if a mentor doesn't know literally everything there is to know about the game then they're unfit to help others. Also, people don't even ask for help most of the time in my experience and expect you to lay it all out before them without even asking. When you do offer advice on fights or classes without someone asking for it first, a lot of times you will be verbally abused and called an "elitist a@#hole" or one of the many other colorful phrases that have been mentioned in this thread. If you decide not to offer advice unless someone asks, people call you a bad mentor and are rude to you anyway. So either way, the expectations some people have of mentors are just plain unrealistic. I became a mentor to help others the way others helped me when I first joined the game, not be harassed and held to an unrealistic standard that's not laid out in the mentor agreement in-game.
P.S. Astrope is not the only two-seater mount, there are also the Draught Chocobo and Ceremony Chocobo, both of which take far less work to obtain.
