The fundamental problem being that for this to work, the new players would need to know first to look here, and also would need to chance upon your forum thread.

I like the idea and all, but it will probably last a few days and die out.

Agreed, and hopefully a mentor system would be made available ingame at some point, but as with FFXI's, new players:

a) Didn't know the mentor system existed
b) Didn't know what the mentor icon was, I personally thought it was like a medal
c) At one point, pretty much everyone had it enabled, and none were willing to help, they just liked it cause it looked important

Yes, new players are finding this game to be an ass-kicking experience...they are feeling lost and confused...they cant figure out how to buy new gear (I cant blame them).

What Im proposing here is a Mentor System.

New players and old players alike.. please post here! Post your ingame name and your server, old players with experience please do the same.

Lets help the newbies enjoy this game... theres only so much that can be done with testing and patching...but theres a lot more that can be accomplished if we work as a community.

Edit: Maybe we should also start a "New Player Advice from the Vets" thread as well. I'm sure that a lot of new players haven't quite realized that the first things they should do is get Bloodbath, Second Wind, Cure and Sacrifice to help with self healing. Things like that
