For me it is simple. If im queuing for a dungeon/trial/raid where i know every tactic "by heart" then i choose every language. Not difficult to write "hi" at the beginning and something like "bye/merci/danke..." at the end. when Im queing for something where i do think that there might be needed proper tactic communication then i choose a language that i can communicate properly. My main language doesnt exist in the game so...

If you know your role and the general strat used for the encounter then it's fine.

There is pretty much no content that actually needs complicated communication.

As for dungeons, they're easy enough to figure out on your own. And if I can't figure a mechanic out, I'll ask my FC while keeping an eye iut and try to figure it out myself.

it depands , in my case i only q for eng so when i get matched with people who start speaking other languages than eng i find it really rude
because they chose a language they dont speak in their q , not that i speak in party chat anyway other than hello and gg

Yes, I agree. If you do know your role and the general strategy, it should be okay. And as long as people greet each other in some form.

But when people do not know the strategy it becomes a problem.

One of my LS friends was in Tam Tara Deepcroft (Hard). She had queued for a Japanese language group. One person had never been in there before and only spoke English. This person did not know the strategy for the first boss and killed the adds. My friend tried to explain in Japanese first, but the other person couldn't understand. She then tried to explain in broken English, but the person still couldn't understand. They wiped at the first boss 3 times. They eventually voted to abandon the dungeon.

I guess the person queued for Japanese, despite not being able to speak it, because they wanted to get into the ID faster. But in the end, that person wasted 3 other people's time, and no one got any benefit.

Later, my friend asked me how she should have explained it in English. She wrote a memo so she can explain it to another person if the same situation happens again. (As far as I know, it hasn't.)
I think my friend was very kind to go out of her way to write a memo to help English-only speakers who queue for Japanese parties. She has no obligation to explain it in English in the Japanese-language group, but she is trying her best anyway.

As you mentioned, knowing the general strategy is key. As long as everyone can function together to clear the dungeon, be it by preparation, auto-translate usage, or learning a few simple phrases, there is no problem.

It especially becomes a problem in PvP, where strategy is often discussed. PvP sometimes does require complicated communication. It is tough when a couple people in the group cannot understand the strategy and work as a group.

Wait. You select a language in DF that you don't speak, and then expect the others to respect that and cater to your language skills?

Um... if they don't understand any English, German, French or Japanese... what do they get out of the game? Those languages aren't only used in DF.
(And if they do understand at least one of them, just not well enough to speak it fluently, they can still communicate enough to say "My English is bad, but I try" or something like that. English used because AFAIK, it's the most common language to be taught in schools as a second (or third) language.)

Native speakers skip the story, too - some are here mostly for the gameplay. And just because it may be taught, doesn't mean people learn/remember. ;/ I haven't asked people why they'd play without speaking any of the offered languages, but I do see that they enjoy the game.

(Plus, it's much easier to learn to read than to write IMO.. Can remember what a word means when you see it, but not actually produce it yourself)

    *shrug*

I've been doing it since launch. Makes DPS queue times way less painful.I've had parties with people from other languages maybe twice in all that time. May have been more but oftentimes my roulettes go like this or are in complete silence so language is irrelevant:

    Tank: Hello!
    Healer: Hihi.
    DPS 1 & 2: Hi/Hullo
    Silence
    Clear Dungeon
    Everyone: Thanks, bye!

It's not like you need to coordinate to do dungeons anymore except on patch launch day. Most people know what to do. If I'm going into more difficult content it's with PF/FC party so langugage is a non issue. As long as you use the auto-translate function if needed, it's fine.

I queued for a mentor roulette and got a guildhest that required all enemies be killed within a few seconds of each other to clear it, and I didn't realize it at first, having not done many guild hests by choice, but I figured it out fairly quickly. So did the rest of the party, except for the bard in the group with us. He/she would DPS a single target and kill it. I tried explaining what do do but the mobs kept dying to this player. I tried doing single word sentences to try to fill their chat box on the chance that maybe they didn't notice what I said. They kept killing. I even tried /S and /sh and /yell. They kept killing. Finally, through tremendous efforts by myself, the other DPS, and the healer we managed to do it. At the end I decided to hold my tongue on the matter, since we did manage to finish it somehow, but the bard didn't. They said something just before they left. In French.
