It stuck to the formula because that's what first expansions do. It's wiser to improve what you already have, and take the content deeper. If you exhaust all your options too soon, the devs will have no where to go.I'm not really that excited for 4.0 because of Heavensward... Hopefully they can showcase something new with it, but Heavensward stuck to formula too much, stuff like Diadem and FC Airships just fell completely flat... Hopefully Palace of the Dead can be different, and 4.0 can have something like that at launch, but right now I'm not expecting much... I expect they'll just reset everything, rather than keeping up this momentum...
Drop FATEs from 4.0 entirely and give me Campaign/Besieged instead, and I'll be hyped as f*ck though... I mean, a trailer will drop and I'll probably get hyped for the story alone, but if it's just "Lv70! New dungeons! New FATEs!"? Meh...
You also want to stick to the formula because of development time. Unlike patches you know they already have to work on new zones, new mob-types, new jobs, adding an entire new system along with the expansion would really make it take much longer to release.
new battle systems (2.1 maps/PvP, 2.3 hunts, 3.1 diadem, 3.3 Aquapolis, 3.35 deep dungeon) is better to wait at least one patch into the expansion. they can do a better job of teasing them though.
3.55 or 3.56 will most likely be the last patch, so no it won't be a year... End of or sometime in spring. Do the math!
3.4 is the last 8 man raid sometime about Aug 23 to Sep 6th one of the 3 weeks.
3.5 is the last 24 man raid Nov22nd to Dec 13th give or take...
Both will have the new story that pushes us into 4.0
3.55/3.56 will have the 2nd 1/2 of the 3.5 story just befor 4.0 drops. That puts 4.0 some time in March or April ish..and that adds up to just over 1/2 a year. After fanfest

They will doubtlessly announce 4.0 at Fanfest simply because SE has always been predictable. My timeline would be
3.35 - July 12th
3.4 - September 13th
3.5 - December 20th or January 3rd
3.55/3.6 - April 4th or 11th
4.0 - July 18th, 2017
I don't think there will be a 3.5 or a 3.55. I think the last patch will be 3.45 Reason being is cause heavensward was all about the dragon song war and the dragon song war is over. Yah I know Alexander and Void Ark aren't finished yet. But they really don't need a big patch to be implemented nor do they have to be implemented separately. So that doesn't mean there will be a 3.5 just because those 2 aren't finished. As far as the cut scene at the end 3.3 goes. That I think is the end of heavensward. I believe heavensward will end at 3.45. With no 3.5.

The 24-man raids have always been used as a way for players to catch up on gear, so it'd be weird to not have that for the last part of Alexander.
There's the Warring Triad quests that haven't been finished yet, and they don't add more than 1 trial in a major patch, so that leaves 3.4 and 3.5 to finish off Goddess and Demon.
The Dragonsong arc started in 2.4, it's not just exclusive to Heavensward. The new story arc will be starting in 3.4, going into the next expansion's story (along with a sub story regarding Ishgard, similar to Ul'dah in the 2.x MSQ)
All that said, they already mentioned adding new floors to the Palace of the Dead in either 3.4 or 3.5, so we already know there's plans for a patch 3.5.
Post a link where they stated 3.5 cause I never saw that. So as far as I know that's just speculation till I see proof.

A mentor stole my house, slapped me across the face, and raised my ping from 15 to 30. Literally unplayable.

there will be more than likely a 3.5 and a 3.55... 3.55 will be used to uncap tomes so people can farm all they want in preparation of 4.0
