I'd imagine it's a fragment of the Avere we battled in Tam-Tara (Hard), we did kinda fight him until he exploded...

I'd say it's either Edda, or "Avere" has a friend... Avere is dead, of course, what we have here is a Voidsent using his head as a body, it's entirely possible that that Voidsent has friends, and this is one of them... That would create one terrifying love triangle... That absolutely has to be "Avere" though, which really limits who the woman is...

I'm fairly sure it's Edda though... A change of clothing means nothing, she's already done that, and they'd be stupid to just out right state/show that it's Edda... They'd completely kill the suspense and reveal if they did that... Obviously I've already concluded it's Edda, but now I go in and when I see Edda I'm excited because I called a painfully obvious reveal! If they just out right stated it's Edda, I'd have no such satisfaction from the reveal... If I go in and it's not Edda? Well... "What a twist!", good on SE for keeping it purposefully ambiguous... That wouldn't be nearly as much of a twist if the possibility that it is Edda wasn't there... By purposefully not showing us who this is, both possibilities are valid and both reveals are more satisfying...

Actually, I'm unconvinced of that as well. Take a look at the screenshot posted earlier:

Now, take a look at "Avere", as he appears in Tam-Tara Hard:

While the two are both obviously the same species of Voidsent (Ahriman? Naga?), the helmet sits quite differently on the head. Now, take a look at this recent Lorecast excerpt:

Ahriman, Nagas and the “Floating Head” of Avere Bravearm are very similar. Are they all inhabited by the same voidsent entity?

A: Alright, you know about possession. Ahriman, they go into an animal eye, that’s why they take that shape. So what did Edda’s possess?…
So, then, it could very easily be another possessed head. That might seem like a huge coincidence, but look at how many Ahriman are floating around.

Again, while I don't think this 100% eliminates the possibility of it being Edda and Avere, it definitely opens up a big enough possibility of it not being them to leave me unconvinced. The radically-differing clothes and Voidsent (size AND design), the potentially asynchronous story, Yoshida and the dev team's coyness on the subject...it's far from obvious, and I think there's a lot of confirmation bias going on regarding the whole thing across the internet.

I know I'm real late to this party but I've always wondered how Edda got so powerful. After all, the player character is only non-Padjal white mage and Edda was initially shown as a lackluster conjurer.

If she was a necromancer, where does that fall within the current breakdown of magic users? An offshoot of black mages?

If I'm not mistaken, necromancy is actually a form of void magic that involves binding a voidsent within a corpse. If anything Black Mage and Necromancer would both be offshoots of the original Mhachi Void Mage.

I would argue though that Edda didn't actually become very powerful at all. In Tam-Tara HM we only ever fought the voidsent, never Edda herself. She only became a threat because of the sheer number of voidsent she was letting loose through her attempts to reanimate Avere. She got good at opening void gates, that's all. Though it still begs the question of where she learned to do that...

It can be assumed that she delved into the dark arts with an obsession borne of madness, studying night and day without sleep while searching for a way to restore Avere. She may also have gotten lucky, and stumbled upon a cash of daemonic tomes or something which provided a shortcut to power. She may even have managed to get in contact with some greater Voidsent who was only too happy to empower her, knowing the chaos she'd eventually unleash. There are many possible explanations for her quick rise to power. In fact, shortcuts to great power is pretty much the hallmark of evil to begin with.

Someone recently posted a list of minions and mounts of this patch:

You can see that mount D, is Avere's head. Gotta wonder why they taught people would want to ride that.

Okay, so, I can be the big person here and admit I was wrong - it's totally Edda.

Simple... Ascians. It fits their MO and lets face it, it's becoming the 'go to' plot idea now in Eorzea for when things going horribly wrong. Although I can understand and definitely sympathize that grief makes you do silly things... the last time we see her before the whole Tam-Tara HM quest is she promises us that she would "return to her hometown and begin her training (as an adventurer and CNJ) anew", in other words, trying to be a better healer as it was what cost Avare his life in the first place, her lackluster healing skill.

So for her to do a complete 360 into practicing necromancy and summoning undead and voidsent to bring Avare back to life... something seems off about this whole situation. And we already know the Ascians appear to the downtrodden and outcasts of society with promises of making that person more powerful. It's a good a guess as any.

I hope this dosen't lead to something like "OMG Avere is totally a primal gais", frankly having a Primal be a mere dungeon boss, even retroactively seems a little disappointing
