I only do the maps with my friends / fc and we all decided together as a free company that "Whoever owns the map, gets the loot unless the map owner says different." As we all gather about 3-4 maps each so we do the set activity for quite a prolonged period of time.
most groups i go with make the rule map owner gets the minions that drop and everything else is fair game for whoever rolls.. im quite ok with those rules after all its the map owners maps
I don't think there's even a wrong or right way, you can argue many different ways to do it. What's important is you find a group that matches your opinion on how it's done to avoid disappointment. Personally, I get a bunch of ppl together, we all have a couple of maps and we all roll on what we can. I find it all equals out roughly in the end for loot that way.
I only run with friends and I let them need everything. If they put in the work killing the enemies they have just as much right to roll as I do, whether I hold the map or not.
The people I run maps with (not PF; PF leader sets the rules in the PF and anyone who joins agrees to them) have done "Everyone rolls GREED if they want the item, Map Owner rolls NEED if they want it". Its a nice, simple way of letting the map owner get priority without having to type out whether people can roll on items. If the owner wants a free-for-all, he just GREEDs with the rest of the group.
EDIT: Oh, and any randomly dropped loot stays with whoever got it (unless they want to give it to the Map Owner). Even the Control V we saw once...

at first I made fun of the people who had loot rules but I dont care anymore, I am going in there for achievements now but if someone dares to tell me that they need my auto roll loot and gil from too, I will slap them.
This here is really good to do with friends! The people I run maps with (not PF; PF leader sets the rules in the PF and anyone who joins agrees to them) have done "Everyone rolls GREED if they want the item, Map Owner rolls NEED if they want it". Also on Balmung usually pf is aqua=ffa which is pretty cool also cause it helps with the RNG of portals and your map just being a bust.
I usually see map owner gets treasure, and all greed once inside.
I have always done maps with good friends, and it's always been "Map owner gets all the loot, unless they say otherwise", we get annoyed when there's people not from our friend group, and they need a good piece of loot we want, or mats, and don't trade 'em over. We're always in voice chat when we're doing maps among ourselves so it's always like "Do you need these adamantite rivets?" "Nah, Keep 'em, you're the better crafter" So it works out.
But yeah, it's always been "Map owner gets the loot". I mean, they DID gather/buy the map themselves, they deserve to get the loot from it. And if you get their loot, it's good manners to trade it to them, because you would want them to do the same if there's loot from your map you really want.
It also means you will always get loot, sometimes RNGesus isn't so kind and you can have four maps, and all your loot goes to others.
