Just a tangent and not 100% related to shatter, but how the hell do people on PS4 play this? My PC needs some repairs so I switched to PS4, and oh my god the lag is so bad and the framerate drops + input lag gets to the point where I get motion sickness. It takes like 5-10s before I can even click on someones name to target them.

If a lot of players are playing on PS4, I can understand now why PvP ain't popular, lol.

I have no serious issues with PvP on the PS4 version. Turning your effects down helps a lot with the lag. Also, I don't know what job you play as in PvP, but if you're melee you can clear what you have targeted then put the person you do want to target right in front of you and press X.

Thanks. I'm going to try turning down effects to see if it helps. I already moved to 720p but it's still pretty bad at the large crystals when everyone piles on it. I'm using keyboard and mouse though, maybe it's better on controller. I find the mouse on the PS4 has some issues with accuracy at the highest speed setting. That along with the input lag makes it kinda disorienting. So far I just switched to mnk, which I don't really know how to play but I use they keyboard more for it than other jobs, and I just try to avoid the areas where 72 people gather.

    That's really odd ...

I run on Ps4 with the default effect settings and I almost never experience lag, dips in the frame rate, or any kind of latency issues. Everything is smooth; and I've never had to adjust anything except to fit my personal preferences. I do use a keyboard (for typing purposes); however, I do not use a mouse. I use a controller; so, I wonder if having a mouse set up is what's causing the problem? I have trouble believing that something so small could be the cause, but I can't think of any other reason you'd be having such a different experience from what I get. If you do find that it makes a difference, can you let us know? I once considered setting up a mouse for faster targeting (especially on healer jobs), but if it throws everything out of whack I'll be glad I never did that...

Hi Februs, just curious would you have any tips how to target enemies in the middle of enemy pack using controller without mouse? I play bard on controller and always have such hard time trying to pick up that healer in the middle of packed enemies and their pets... thank you!!!

    Embrace the circle jerk lol.

Jokes aside, I'm not sure I'm the best person to offer advice, because I don't run as ranged Dps. The only ranged character I ever take into PvP is a healer, and even then, I'm rarely running offensively. I'll take a shot, though. Here's what I can recommend:

Most often, when hitting the target button the game will automatically assign targeting priority to whichever target is closest to you and in the centre most position of your field of view. This means that I'm spending a lot of time micro managing my screen (angle, elevation, and range) to put my preferred target as close to the middle as possible. When I hit X, I'm either on target or close enough that it only takes 1 or 2 taps of the D-pad, or a minor camera adjustment (O>X "circle jerking"), to get me to where I want to be.

When auto-targeting, you're basically looking for the best line of sight, and that means constantly playing with your camera and position. Melee have a slight advantage here because proximity makes a difference. The closer I am to a target, the less targets there are between me and it. That means that I'm more likely to target the player I want, rather than a bystander, if I'm in their face. Obviously this is a more viable option for tanks than it is for Dps (especially ranged); however, you should still be able to establish LoS from a distance if you're careful with your camera and positioning. Consider playing with your elevations, in particular, to give yourself the best possible view.

Another thing to do is to be conscious of your personal position to the target. Sometimes you may have to flank the target to reduce the number of players between you and them. Another option is to simply wait for the melee players to drift away from them in order to clear the clutter. Don't be afraid to take a quick pause in order to get a lay of the land and decide where the best place to be standing is on top of your optimal camera angle.

You should also be very aware of your soft targets, because they can mess with you. If you have no current target, one of the default features puts a soft target on any enemy who hits you. In ideal situations, this allows you to identify who is targeting/attacking you by simply pressing X to confirm the target and turn them into your hard target, but it can also lead you to targeting the wrong player by accident if you didn't realize your game soft targeted an enemy. So be aware of when it happens, to avoid accidentally hard targeting the wrong player.

You can, however, use soft targets to your advantage by "jumping" targets from one to the next. If you target a player/pet standing next the one you want, the D-pad will slot a temporary soft target onto the "next" target. In PvE, the "next" target is determined by the enemy list. There isn't an enemy list in PvP, so the "next" target is typically determined by proximity to your primary target. The constant movement of players in PvP can sometimes throw a wrench into the works; however, casters must stand still to cast, so you'll have ample opportunities if you're quick on the draw. Just remember that you'll want to cancel and re-target quickly if your primary target moves too far away from the one you want.

Cancelling and re-applying targets is something you really want to get good at, as well. Circle Jerking (quickly dropping a target with circle and re-applying with X) is the fastest way for a controller player to apply a target. Depending on the clutter of the battle field and your line of sight, it can also be pretty accurate. It takes some practice, though. You're gonna want to take your time and make the necessary adjustments to your camera and position to make the best of it. You also want to learn this in the event you automatically soft target the wrong player, or directly target the wrong player, so you can drop them quickly.

These are just a few pointers, though. Most of these things are from a melee player's perspective, so I really don't know if they'll be of use to you. Hopefully they are, but if I think of anything else that is more ranged-player specific I'll let you know. Regardless, I recommend getting a lot of practice in. The more fluidly you can drop, reapply, or change targets, the easier time you'll have picking a specific target out of the group.

That's really helpful Februs, thanks ever so much!!! Lots of good points I never thought of - gotta practise!! Thank you!!!

I really wish SE would at least give us a filter to exclude enemy pets from D-pad targeting lol...

Playing on PS4 makes me hate 72s so much. Secure was ok because majority of the time you only had a portion of the alliance to deal with. Seize, Slaughter and Shatter 72s can go somewhere.
