How about doing desynthesis for a while, then go farm coil turns 1-4 for gear? On my server allagan nuggets/wootz ingots go for over 100k each, and the silk and hides are not too far off. Thats what I used to do when I got bored of crafting

Diadem chest items; Items obtained per spoils may sell.
Dungeon item/minion farm.
Scroll farms...
I see a ton of possibilities...
For desynthesis you need given crafter on level 30... he wrote without crafting![]()
daily roulettes as bonus. after as the in need which is usually tank.
choose 3 classes to desynth gear for and level them via dungeon drops. probs best to use wvr ltw and arm. this will take awhile but ultimatly you can get materials that sell quite well.
or alternatly you could drop arm desynth in favour of bsm and run moogles hm for mog materia as that sells well.
t9 this one turn has mats and a song sheet that sell for a reasonable amount and undersized takes 4mins to clear with a competent party. also items desynth if skill is higher enough.
merc runs, sell your services either by helping people clear primals / raids or just helping people beat ques as supplying the tank role.
retainers. if you have 4 use two battle one miner one botonist (miner + botonist will need levelling to 60 to make them worth while) if not use all battle class type. need / greed all dungeon drops trade for seals and buy ventures to fund the hourly send outs. check mb to fins the desired items to retrieve.
in downtime gather enemy drops like wyvern skins, dragon skins deepeye tears, dhamel skins /saliva, check your mb see which sells rather well and test which arent to bothersome to gather. hq will have a better value but are rarer drops.
with just alittle time and effort you can set yourself up to get a reasonable daily income with minimal effort. no you wont make gil like a gatherer or crafter but you can def make gil as a battle class.
edit*
should of added it will take no crafting to raise your crafters as you can buy every item needed of mb for the daily gc turn ins, its slower than doing it yourself but it wont take long to get them to the required level to unlock desynth. although i would reccomend getting them to 50 this way as self repairs work out cheaper than vender repairs and so will help you save gil in the long run.

Some hints if you decide not to craft/gather:
1) If you decide to run the market you should always check selling history. Its really important to see how frequently an item sells and at what price.
2) A really rewarding strategy is to buy and sell at a higher price. There are plenty of people that can sell at even 50% less than normal price. They do that in order to sell quickly of course but with a much less profit so why not use this in your advantage?
3) Propably the most rewarding method is spiritbond. Materia will always sell like crazy no matter patch or demand. If you focus on making gil, a simple method would be to get your weekly tier5 materia (preferably det or crit rate) and sell them. Normal price could be 250-300k each.
4) Last, is people's boredom. It may sound stupid but it works! There are ton of items in the market that are purchasable that sell really good but crafters wont move an inch to get them so why not? (Do this, believe me it works)
because after they sold so fast i will craft another bunch of items and sell them for the same 50% less price than averge and then you are sitting on my items and can't sell them with profit while i have already made my money. if i sell for a much cheaper price i do this because i want to sell them quickly, yes, to get back the space on my retainer to sell even more items.
your method may work, sure, but it is a bit risky.
well the topic is about making gil w/o crafting and the items im talking about are based on that. I don't have any crafter to know all about craftwars...![]()
Since you said you're still working on leveling your retainers, I'm curious as to what level they are at? Once you get them to 50 though and get them decent gear, quick explorations will usually turn out some decent items to sell (not always). Pending what class your retainers are, long explorations can turn out some very good items. I send my fishing retainer on water explorations in hopes of getting ghestal's or fat cats to sell.
But if you're looking for the route where you can fight things for your income, then I'd suggest trial farming for boss drops; levi barb, mog whisker, etc. They usually bring in a decent amount of gil when sold (at least on my world). Then as other's have said, need/greed for items in all dungeons you go in and turn in for GC seals, then buy sellable items. If you notice something on the MB that is selling well that drops from a monster kill, you can always go hunting some, but those usually end up fluctuating quickly and can be very hit or miss.
Don't worry. I'll spam cure the crap out of you with my Paladin.

You can make a sufficient income for most things just regularly doing your roulettes as adventurer in need. The in need bonus is almost as big as the actual clear (including mob money, if applicable) + roulette bonus.
Doing ventures on retainers, well...you probably can't have a decently leveled gathering/crafting retainer and the battlecraft retainers are reaaally hit or miss, but it does help a little.
That aside, you have to get lucky with boss drops. Minions, mats etc can all be turned into profit. The aetherstones and orchestrion rolls from the coils also went over the table for some good coin recently, materia V prices unfortunately dropped quite a bit.
Also, battlecraft temple leves can reward items that (on Balmung) sell for up to 40k at times. It's not much, but it helps, especially if you'd otherwise just be sitting on your leves.
If you want to make even more, you can play the market board game of buy low, sell high. That requires quite a bit of insight and tracking, tho.
All of those work for making some coin to fuel your glamour/relic needs. It's typically not much on its own, but it compounds. If you want to make big money, I'm afraid there's no way around crafting and gathering. Just one example: Grade 1 alchemy prisms sell for 2000+ on the MB. Blue landtrap leaf costs 128, a clear prism 200, rock salt and quicksilver about 10gil each, all easily procurable from a vendor. Add 100gil for crystals, 40 more for shards and you're left at 488 gil production cost. That's 1500 gil profit for clicking "synthesize", then hitting "careful synthesis II". You just can't beat that as DoW/DoM.
This is kind of the point of them adding crafting mats to stuff like coil. So you can kill bosses and get things to sell.
You can try selling mats from Esoterics. Go for the NQ items as they are only 20 Esoterics and don't sell for much less than the HQ ones. Of course, it depends how much they sell on your server.
On mine, they go for about 40k a pop and with your dailies, you can get around 250 Esoterics a couple of roulettes. So possible up to 500k (minus the tax so maybe less) in mats if you can part with your tomes.
As a crafter, I buy these mats regularly to make 220 gear.
