so ... 228 of something?

well though you need 2 other items at least to get the third which actually provides the stat increase. now if we asume you need 1 of each, that's still 152 items to finish the weapon (in the worst case).
i wonder if poetics will be used again
Hmmm i think you can add 228 extra point on you relic, so if each materia give you a guaranteed +3 you can apply 76 materia at bare minimum

I think he also mentioned, prior to this Live Letter, that you can substitute in materia if you want. So you could, in theory, speed up the process by using materia like in the old Novus step.
Sounds better than previous steps, but I'm still lamenting how utterly dull Relic quests are in this game... Ever since the first steps back in 2.0, Relics have completely lacked anything making them feel remotely epic... Recent patches have done a good job with solo trials in the MSQ, can we please get something on that level in the Relic quests?Anima Weapons
*Introduced via gameplay
You’ll be able to develop your weapons further by allocating points to each type of parameter. The cap for each parameter is 120. You’ll be using two different types of items to convert into a catalyst for allocating points. One conversion will yield 3 points. Sometimes if you are lucky you will be able to get a higher yield of points.
There will be various ways to earn the items needed for conversion, so find the avenue that best suits your playstyle.
The time efficiency if quite different for each method. However, though I can’t say very clearly, everything has been balanced in terms of spending gil and time. There will be much more variation.
Completing your Anima weapon will give your weapon a new look. Ultimately, it will attain a power on par with that of a weapon you put 3 grade V materia in, so it will definitely be a useful weapon.
Additionally, after investigating the logs of the conditions of everyone playing in relation to Anima weapons, we’ve found that the number of crystals compared to the number of people who have the “unidentified” items is lower, so we will be easing the drop rates in Patch 3.3.

I assume the 228 at the top indicates how many of whatever we feed it.
Even with more ways to obtain these token things than with the 200-210 step, this looks like it could be a significantly greater hell.
Would you rather it be 228 materia (at least) and 228 items like the last time we changed the stats of our relic?
Each item we use gives 3-5 points, so 46-76 items are needed (we needed 75 Alexandrite and at least 75 materia to do the last one, for reference)
Yes, its going to be a grind. Its the relic quest, its meant to be a grind (because its either going to be skill-based or grind-based, and the vast majority can't get the skill-based weapon, so go for the grindy one...similarly, this is likely why Aquapolis is RNG-based rather than skill-based; everyone has a chance with RNG, but the majority would do nothing but whine if we have Savage-level difficulty anywhere outside of Savage)

But they added a bigger shortcut- in this grind, if you have the gil, you can choose to substitute the weapon food with materia. That can significantly cut the grind, even if you only use grade I - III materia, which are dirt cheap.
Also it may be 228 stat points, so it could be whatever 228/3 (since each food is +3 to a stat minimum) is worth of food minimum, plus the +4/+5 bonus chance. And they did say the relic will have the same stats as an i240 weapon +3 grade V materia so, you're coming out ahead of the lore tome i240 versions on top of that. I think even the Novus was 75 Alex/materia but when it was finalized, you got bonuses added to your first two stats, so it ended up not being a total 1:1 ratio of items to stats.
