The Blue Mage could have only a set number of spaces allotted for monster abilities, while using their own, original spells in their main hotbar. For the monster abilities, we could possibly collect them and stock up, kind of like how magic works in Final Fantasy 8.

I dunno, I've never actually played FF11, so I don't know much about Blue Mages, except that they learn abilities from enemies.

11 wasn't the only appearance of BLU. They were also in V, X and VII (I think, I know they were in the latter two) as well as Bravely Default and Bravely Second.

Now I have a question. Would BLU's flavor be persevered is the Job was merged with Beastmaster or a job centered on lycanthropy?

I think FF9 had it, too, with Quina, but s/he was a weird case. I don't know what a Beastmaster does (typical hunter?), and I'm assuming lycanthropy is transformation into a ... were-creature of some sort?

Actually, come to think, we don't have any jobs that revolve around transformations a la Druid from Diablo 2's expansion (or WoW). I think it'd be cool to play as a job that transforms.

Strago [Is that how his name was spelled? Relm's father] (FF6) and Gau (FF4) were also BLUs in a sense though not by name (they both learned abilities from monsters)

Beastmaster summoned monsters from pots in FFXI. They were in other FFs too, V had one IIRC

Strago's Job Class in FFVI was Blue Mage. Full stop.

This is part of the reason why I ask is the flavor of BLU could be retained by merging it with Beastmaster, a transformation-centered job or both. Blue Mage and Beastmaster both are relate to Monsters and their skills but their methods are different, more so that the difference between RDM and FCR (which both mix magic with melee swords).

Actually I think i might make a thread for such a Job later

Strago is Relm's grandfather not father, and Gau is from FFVI as well. There is no blue magic in FFIV, except for "Jive" in After Stories.

To clarify the following games/characters have BLUE MAGIC (or some varient).

FFIV After Story: Calca has "Jive" (which is random).
FFV: All characers can be a Blue Mage, and may have "Blue Magic" set when using another job as well.
FFVI: Strago has "Lore". Gau's "Rage" is completely different than Blue Magic, as it replaces "Attack" and you lose control of him. Gau never learns any attack he uses.
FFVII: Everyone can use the "Enemy Skill" materia.
FFVIII: Quistis has "Blue Magic" as her Limit Break.
    FFIX: Quina has "Blue Magic".
FFX: Kimahri has "Ronso Rage" as his Overdrive.
FFX-2: The Gun Mage dressphere has "Blue Bullet".
FFXI: Blue Mages have "Blue Magic".

There's also a few other, none main series games as well.

I'd also like to point out that the OP dumbed down how Blue Magic is learned. In some games you do learn it by taking a direct hit by the spell/ability, but in other games it's different. In FFVI Strago just has to be in the battle when the abilities is used, in FFVIII you have to use items on Quistis, in FFIX Quina eats enemies, and in FFX Kimahri has to use Lancet.
