Removal of Surnames

I'm not reading this stupid thread for fourteen pages. It's just not important at all. To think that there are 14 pages of replies just goes to show you that a person with no legitimate argument towards making this game more enjoyable can get as many hits as those who install a thread solely for the help of the current system.

Here. I'll add my point just so everybody will not talk about this thread. The reason why they implemented the current system was because everybody tried to use the exact key names and ended up making a mockery of it by spelling it differently. Case in point. Do you know how many Squall names I seen in FFXI and how stupid it was that I seen maybe 27 different variations of it on one server? Squallx, xsquallx, xxsquallx, xxsquallxx, xsquallxxx, Squally, Squallll, etc. Hell even actual human names such as Kenneth. I seen Kenny, Kennny, Keny, Kenneth, Keneth, Kenni, Kenie, Kimmy. Jesus!

At least this time I can use my current name of Kimahri Ronso. Even though this is an actual FFX name, I have only seen one other like it. This system provides more variety so do me a favor and stop coming up with threads that doesn't help this game with it's current problems. It's rather annoying I have to go through 2 pages of threads dealing with nothing to finally come across one I'd like to see.

Well clearly you're delusional. How exactly does this benefit the game more than your desire to change it? Simply put this is a selfish ploy to imply that somehow it's better to have one name than two. That's like Tom Hanks being called Tomhanks. Stupid.

It's like sitting down with your friend Tom Hanks for a sandwich and saying, "Hey Tom Hanks! What's your favorite sandwich meat, Tom Hanks?"

Or meeting some hot babe at the club. When she asks, "Hey there hot-stuff! What's your name?" To which you reply, "Aldroania Wasakutsumakashima".

Now that's just silly. There's a reason games that are well more populated than FFXIV don't use surnames.

If anything, surnames should be optional, and not required.

I was excited at the thought of surnames being included in FFXIV. Now that several months have passed and I see the pros and cons next to my XI experience I have to agree with the OP that surnames are worthless.

A nice middle ground would to show only the characters name but upon examination it would declare their full title with the linkshell they belong to. Thats a middle ground. Personally, I would prefer surnames be wiped and be allowed to rename and possibly re-select our races. SE is making big changes to this game and I want a chance to change too, leaving FFXIV's launch behind me with it.

So that you'd have to examine someone to send them a tell? Yeah. Good idea. Not.

Surnames will never be removed. Everyone already chose their name. Removing surnames would create an enormous amount of duplicates. How are they gonna decide who gets the name and who doesn't? First come first serve? Lottery?
SE really needs to make just another unpopular choice to make a small minority of nitpickers (as this thread abundantly demonstrates) happy.

Surnames have a simple, undeniable advantage that outweights every other consideration. Anyone can get the name he wants and he has always been known as for years on whatever game he walked into. Newbies don't need to type for hours or accept horrible pregenerated names in order to enter the game, and basically everyone can have the first name he wants, without conflicts.

In other MMORPGs the more you proceed after launch, the more you see completely nonsensical names like "Jasksasd", because all the names that make sense have been taken. Surnames in FFXIV mitigate that problem a lot.

It is a good idea. However, the best as stated before would to have made surnames optional.
