With the sub price that I pay, they are effectively giving away $1 worth of play time to these people. I think I'll be OK.

Personally, I'm more concerned about the possibility of it disrupting the 45 day reclamation cycle for abandoned housing.
Personally, I don't think logging in during free days should be counted in the "Visit to save it" time table.
Because as I understand it, simply going "Hey free log in day, not like I'm going to come back but I'll still log in for a few minutes to keep my housing plot" is actually a valid scenario for an ex-player to retain something they no longer have a right too.
While I'm not in the housing hunt at all, I would really hope their check-in during this time doesn't count, but I'm sure it does.Personally, I'm more concerned about the possibility of it disrupting the 45 day reclamation cycle for abandoned housing.

They don't happen often enough to keep a house if you're no longer playing.Personally, I'm more concerned about the possibility of it disrupting the 45 day reclamation cycle for abandoned housing.

It is a double edged sword. But I'm sympathetic enough to see it's value. a free log in day may be just enough to get an otherwise loyal customer just enough extra time to get out of a financial tight spot and come back to the game.
They have to enter the house to refresh the timer.
There are more than likely a few handful of people that do this just to keep their house or otherwise deny potental buyers of it. At least ther were serveral instances of this on my realm during the first round of demolishing.
On a side note, I'm convinced that there's a group of masochist players, considering how loosely they use the term "punished" and "penalized". Either that, or they don't know the term actually means :x

But they can't keep their house unless if they intend to keep playing. And some who didn't return may have been considering returning. I see this as a good thing. Those doing it just to be jerks will likely be very few, and they can only do it once.
If people need a trivial item or some other doodad as an incentive to stay in the game, then they have a bigger problem.
