Healers have always been able to outdps non caster DPS when it comes to AoE with minimal effort.

You are incorrect. No other healers can perform good AoE DPS, but WHM. However, every job is different. WHMs were designed to unleash burst heal, burst AoE damage. That's why they get Assize (that can damage) and Aero3. But there is a reason why Assize has 90 sec CD and holy deals 200 potency with up to 100 lower potency. WHMs can deal good damage only from the begining' if they use all situational long CD abilities and spam holy. They get weaker and weaker later. That's nothing compared to other DPS class and that's very reasonable. Those numbers you see on healers are not massive. If you ever saw Holy - Swiftcast - Holy - Assize. Then, that's 4k'ish AoE damage. You pay dangerous price when stepping into CS. Your main job is to heal, and nothing ever will change that. If you follow the history, healer DPS only get weaker and now don't hit.

While what you say may be true as far as WHM is concerned, Scholars sustained AoE DPS is ungodly compared to other jobs, and they pay absolutely nothing for being able to put up such high numbers, regardless of what fairy they're using. I find it hard to believe that WHM can't out DPS non caster DPS, since unlike those jobs, they have an AoE that not only mitigates damage and deals a metric ton upfront, they also have an AoE DoT and can still push higher numbers even if they just PoM Holy spam for the first 15-30 seconds of a trash pack. Nearly every physical DPS job would've stopped AoE'ing several GCD's before due to TP constraints, while WHM gets a free pass.

Whatever "metric tonnage" AoE dps a WHM might deal with Holy spam, a Gravity spam in Diurnal can do about as well, even without PoM. It's that taking up only 1 GCD and no additional resources to mass-DoT that's enviable to me. SCH can similarly do over half of that in one, but must take up 4x the GCDs and an AF to do triple. As Shadowflare was the post instant/reduced cast Swiftcast for offensive SCHs, Aero III is even more so for WHM.

Which makes it all the more painful when it misses, whereas 3/4 SCH DoTs cannot.

Uh, no, please actually get your facts straight. SCHs have extremely good AoE capabilities that aren't that far behind WHM and, in some situations (such as Super-Banes in A2S), even utterly destroy anything a WHM could hope to put out. Plus, SCH AoE DPS is 100% sustainable, even in raids, as opposed to WHM, which is almost entirely burst. Also, AST might not be as good as the other two, but Gravity can still rack up some impressive numbers pretty quickly, especially in quick burst situations, and with the further buffs to their MP recovery that ASTs got in 3.2, you can get away with even more Gravity spam - embrace the FOOOOMP.
