i have a great idea for a time sink, how about a web site that is directly linked to ff14 with all kinds of info and official forums were people can go complain about the game.

They seem like fun. Fun that requires the effort and commitment core gamers want.

Wolfie, I'm disappointed that you immediately shut down the ideas for just being timesinks without giving a chance to consider what this could do to keep players engaged. Core gamers don't want everything to be easy and quick. Otherwise they'll just breeze through everything and get bored, and why would they pay a monthly fee for that.
If these ideas are boring, I'm not quite sure I'd care to see your idea of "fun".

Now this is gonna sound a bit confusing unless I can word it properly, but...

How about a special 'music band' kind of event. Players can gather rare special musical instruments parts from possible mob drops and gathering, and once all the parts are put together to become a musical instrument (like a violin or something). There'd be a huge choice of musical instruments each with special traits or stats that will determine how good your character would be at playing that instrument (perhaps also be affected by characters race so that bands have a variety of characters in them). Each week a stage appears just outside/inside Ul'dah where groups/linkshells that have aquired a variety of musical instruments stand on the stage to play. Much of the playing is automated, but how well the tune comes out will be determined by what instruments are being used in conjuction with the stats/ranks of the instruments and the character thats playing it.

Each group will get an overall score depending on how well they played, and the winners could win some special items or materia.

It'd take a lot of time and thought to get all the right instruments to help up their score along with working out the best mixture of instruments. Fun and enjoyable time sink

you have quite the imagination and thats awesome, I just dunno if thats something i see a large number of people rushing to do unless the rewards are worth it. What if no one else does the contest and you just win by default. =(

Well I was thinking the special materia could be something to increase drop rates on special items or something so people would work towards the event so they could get the materia to earn more stuff.

Basically, a time-sink hidden within a time-sink.

i can see it now...a rich fat noble man shows up with a collection of rare and exotic materia. He has a terminal disease and wants to give out his collection before he dies. But he is a little...strange. (maybe all the meds he on to keep him alive) But he demands music! And only the best will win a piece from his collection! Didn't win this week? try next week.

Yup, and somehow that terminal disease never kills him, even in 8 years time when we're on the 4th expansion pack and everyone's running around in 1-tonne heavy dragon-scale plate mail with giant glowing swords of death. (That they managed to get by farming materia off the fat guy in the first place to increase their gears drop rate to a value high enough that it didn't take half a century to aquire)
