    It's there so your retainers can bring something back other than fish and it still be utterly worthless.

    I had someone buy a 220 jewel from me and go to her retainer a few days ago. "EWWW my retainers suck. <Earth Materia V>
    I suggested she take it to mutamix with 4 IV materia. "I don't have the money to buy those." I give her some. Bam that Earth 5 became a Craftsmanship V and made her over 3 million gil.
